My DM is having me recreate my 2014 Gloomstalker into the 2024 version for the Vecna Evenof Ruin campaign.
Looking for some build help.
Facts: 14 level Human, standard array ability scores. He has the Sun Blade, +1 studded leather, +1 shield.
Looking for ideas on creating an effective melee focused Gloomstalker.
Thanks for any help regarding fighting styles (two weapon or dueling), and fight strategy (round 1 conjure woodland beings, round two sun blade, cast hunters mark once concentration is gone for conjure woodland beings, ?). Thanks again for your time
What is the starting level? "Sun Blade, +studded leather, +1 shield." indicate much higher than the starting 3rd of a sub class. The standard array makes it difficult as you need higher str/con (for melee) and wisdom (for spells). The level is nice to know as to the choice/need for getting a +2 for abilities or getting a +1 & a feat. and if level 8 knowing there is a 2nd choice.
After having play tested a gloomstalker it's still an alpha striker. Don't crit fish with your new ability. Set the tempo with your fear effect and try to turn that into an overwhelming advantage.
You have 1 4th lvl slot. I'd probably not spend it on CWB. And loose a combat round. It might just go down.
Use Freedom of movement. No concentration and basically negates a bunch of really bad effects. Can last multiple combats in a dungeon. Gives a lot of amazing defense.
Just TWF Hunter's Mark and use dread strikes turn 1. Pick spells that don't use concentration. (Conjure barrage long strider, cure wounds, magic weapon (for your offhand) Pass without trace for out of combat, revivify, aid, dark vision for other party members,)
Combat style, go after the high value squishy targets, pre buff yourself with long strider and freedom of movement and stay on top of them. They won't be able to get away. Use your mobility, it's your greatest strength. Your not a fighter or a barbarian to be fighting on the front lines.
Speedy and mage slayer are amazing feats for this play style. Defensive dualist is a good general feat.
Use nature's veil on off turns to get advantage. On attacks
Once you hit 17 you can use nature's veils for steal wind strike and get advantage on all the spell attack rolls

14th level, sorry for not including it in the facts. This is a 2024 recreation of my Curse of Strahd character

Awesome - thank you
Having a sun sword on a gloomstalker just seems so interesting. like cloak and dagger interesting or Orthos no Inu interesting.
That sun blade negates the Gloomstalker's primary advantage though.
Playing D&D since 1982
Have played every version of the game since Basic (original Red Box Set), except that abomination sometimes called 4e.
