So I'm playing a Dragonborn Beast Conclave Ranger with a Black Bear companion and I have a question about the mechanics of combat with said companion.
Does the bear get its own normal round of attacks during combat (I'm guessing on my turn?) or does it only get to attack as a reaction per Coordinated Attack?
The UA article is really not clear on this. Your coordinated attack is right, but if I am to consider what is written in the PHB, your animal companion do not get the attack action on its turn. At least not until the feature Storm of claws and fangs, at level 11.
Well see (unless I'm reading outdated material) the part about companion bond seems to state otherwise?
Companion’s Bond Your animal companion gains a variety of benefits while it is linked to you. The animal companion loses its Multi attack action, if it has one. The companion obeys your commands as best it can. It rolls for initiative like any other creature, but you determine its actions, decisions, attitudes, and so on. If you are incapacitated or absent, your companion acts on its own. When using your Natural Explorer feature, you and your animal companion can both move stealthily at a normal pace.
so if it rolls initiative it takes its place in the attack rounds like anyone else? which I suppose makes sense a bit that its reaction allows it to attack when I do - because (maybe?) we don't share our attack round?
I believe the 11th level bonus just gives potentially multi-attack back to your companion
"At 11th level, your companion can use its action to make a melee attack against each creature of its choice within 5 feet of it, with a separate attack roll for each target."
So if there are 4 creatures all within 5 feet of it - it can make 4 attack rolls if it wants to (?)
Now, that I red it again...yes I suppose you are right. 1 attack on its turn + 1 reaction attack for Coordinate attack. At 11th level becomes a terminator companion.
The Coordinated Attack is a reaction to your Attack action, so if you're dual wielding it would come between your Attack action and your Bonus action (main hand, beast reaction, off hand).
Under the UA Beastmaster, the companion does have it's own initiative and set of actions.

My ranger dual wields....so would combat go
Ranger Attack 1
Ranger Attack 2
Bear reaction Attack
and then the bear gets its own round of combat?
