One of my friends is an experienced DM and offered to show my wife and I how to play. I'm about 10 hours in and I've really taken to it. Even with the Revised Ranger, it seems like the later level abilities are not that great. Most of what I've read online says Fighter and Rogue both pair well and I've already dipped into Rogue (Ranger 1/Rogue 1) at my group's suggestion (we have 2 experienced players along with my wife and me). The rest of the party is Fighter, Druid, and Wizard.
I know there's probably a lot of decent combinations to be made, but I'm looking for guidance on how much to multiclass as well as when to take levels in each in order to maximize my character's utility and damage as early as possible. Also, looking for input on the archetypes. I'm a human variant and I took Sharpshooter as my first feat. Stats are STR +1, DEX +4, CON +3, INT +0, WIS +3, and CHA +1. Considering Ranger 8/Rogue 8/Fighter 4.
Fighter to get another Fighting Style (looking at maybe Archery and Close Quarters Shooter to ad +3 to ranged attack and negate disadvantage on close range) and Action Surge and either more crits (Champion) or useful trick shots (Arcane Archer) to make up for my lack of spells by cutting ranger short. I only need 3 levels as I already have extra attack in Ranger, but figured I should take one for the ASI.
Rogue to get Sneak Attack, Expertise, Dodge, and Evasion (hoping Dodge and Evasion are worth it). Not sure about an archetype. They only get one ability until 9, and none of the 9th level abilities sound very strong. Assassin sounds cool if I am frequently able to surprise (is that likely?). Otherwise, thinking about Mastermind or Swashbuckler for more advantage.
For Ranger, I was thinking Hunter to take on groups before learning about XGTE. Now, I'm thinking about Gloom Stalker as early on it seems like we explore a lot of dark places and I could scout ahead better. 7 levels would get me WIS ST, but I don't know how important that is. If not, I could see putting more levels into Rogue. Ranger 5 or 6/Rogue 12 or 11/Fighter3. Appreciate any WIS you can provide.
I don't think fighter is truly great, action surge has a lot of appeal but consider what you could have with thos 4 levels in ranger or rogue instead
Ranger 12 rogue 8; provides the 11th level conclave ability like volley (hunter) or stalkers flurry (gloomstalker) both of which can be used every round, rather than action surge once per short rest
Alternatively
Ranger 8 rogue 12; provides the 11th level rogue feature "reliable talent" as well as 9th level Roguish archetype feature like supreme sneak (thief) or superior mobility (scout) and +2d6 sneak attack
Regardless, what I think is your character's niche is ranged attacks and skills. To that end you don't need fighter class. I would recommend hunter scout or gloomstalker thief.
FTR; I have a dwarf ranger/rogue, the plan is ranger 15 rogue 5
I agree. More than 2 classes are rarely worth it, and usually only done for 1 specialized combination of abilities.
Battle master fighter and arcane archer both have neat and useful abilities.
Rogue scout always seemed like the obvious ranger multiclass/substitute to me.
Gloom stalker ranger is the only official ranger I'd recommend (not that the others don't have their merits, gloom stalker is just the coolest), but since you are using revised ranger, beast enclave is also a decent choice.
Incidentally, I personally would not recommend the Revised Ranger as it is not supported by DnD Beyond's character creator, a tool you are presumably using, nor did it become official content.
You’re spot on with my character niche. I’m ranged damage, stealth, and the skill monkey.
I considred 2 levels of fighter just for action surge and ranged +2 and add 2 more levels to Rogue to not lose the ASI and get 1d6 more. Action surge just seems like one of the few ways to dramatically increase damage even if it is for just one round as you pointed out. That said, it doesn’t particularly fit my role and we do have a fighter in the party. Appreciate the input.
There’s another forum on here where the guy has a Fighter 12/ Ranger 4/ Rogue 4 that seems beastly in terms of damage, but I started as a Ranger because I wanted to be a Ranger. I can always make a fighter some other time. That said, I’m not familiar with Battle Master or how well that would mesh. Same with Scout. It seems movement based, but I may not understand the proper use of movement in action yet. Beast enclave didn’t interest me from a role standpoint. Appreciate the advice.
It is annoying that RR is not on this site, but then neither are several spells, backgrounds, archetypes, feats, etc. so it’s no big loss. Definitely like the advantage on initiative and the DM approved anything from Wizards including UA.

3 way multiclass split is pretty costly.

Jesus Saves!... Everyone else takes damage.
