First-time player looking at multiclassing my Gloomstalker with either fighter or rogue, but still new to how actions stack. Assuming I have the initiative and surprise, would Rogue Assassin's critical count only on my first attack, or does it carry on to any additional attacks like Dread Ambush or Extra Attack? Does sneak attack carry on? If I introduce Fighter action surge, does either crits (D20 or surprise) or sneak attack carry on to the 2nd round of action? Thank you.
So sneak attack is once per turn, regardless of number of attacks. Whereas, surprise (Assassin crit) is a crit for each attack including extra attacks or action surge, assuming I have surprise and initiative. So theoretically, a Fighter 5/ Gloom Stalker 3/ Assassin 12 with Sharpshooter and 20 DEX first round could look like this?
Yeah something like that. There are even a few max damage build discussion threads that have fighter/ranger/rogue multiclass doing over 500 average damage in 1 turn.
It is a little reliant on you getting surprise though.
Have i worked this out right or am i over looking something , please advice :)
A Fighter level 5 / Ranger level 3 - Gloom Stalker useing a great axe.Dread Ambusher.
1st Action Attack = 1st normal attack/ that then triggers another attack from Dread Ambusher / 2nd normal attack
Use Surge to gain another action still on the 1st turn.
2nd Action Attack = 1st normal attack/ that then triggers another attack from Dread Ambusher / 2nd normal attack
As the 2nd action is still in the 1st turn of combat dose it also get the additional weapon attack as part of that action, as i do not see any limit to +action/attack as the additional attack is not useing your Bonues action you still have that open for later. meaning (if you had the Great weapon master Feat, witch grants you a nother attack useing your bonues action) this Fighter could have 7 great weapon attacks on the 1st turn of combat. Then from turn 2 onwards it would get only 2 attacks per turn, 3 if he crits or take someone down to 0 HP due to Feat.
Dread Ambusher At the start of your first turn of each combat, your walking speed increases by 10 feet, which lasts until the end of that turn. If you take theAttack action on that turn, you can make one additional weapon attack as part of that action. If that attack hits, the target takes an extra 1d8 damage of the weapon’s damage type.
Sorry for any spelling mistakes. Not sure if i am missing somthing but any advice on this question will help alot thank you. :)
Yes you are correct. With action surge on first turn you get use dead ambusher a second time. I like it with my gloom stalker5, rogue scout4, fighter 2. Getting 3 attacks counting dread ambusher, then bonus action attack ( hand xbow) with crossbow feat and sharpshooter. So 7 attacks in a round. Plus advantage if surprised

Bonus Action: Hunter's Mark
Action: Longbow 2(1d8)+5+10+2(6d6)+2(1d6)=31-115
Gloom Stalker Longbow 2(1d8)+5+10+2(1d6)+2(1d8)=21-59
Extra Attack: Longbow 2(1d8)+5+10+2(1d6)=19-43
Action Surge:
Action: Longbow 2(1d8)+5+10+2(1d6)=19-43
Extra Attack: 2(1d8)+5+10+2(1d6)=19-43
Total=109-303

One warning about Assassin crit though, you still need to succeed on the attack roll to get a critical, you just dont have to score a 20 on the roll.
Relevant Assassin text: "any hit you score against a creature that is surprised is a critical hit."
That’s a good note. Thanks!

so if im 17 assasin 3 gloom stalker, would it be
bonus action hunters mark
Death strike (double dmg dice) -Surprise attack (crit 2 times weapon dmg+sneak attack dmg+hunters mark dmg)+plus bonus dmg
Plus
Dreaded Ambusher - Death strike (double dmg dice) -Surprise attack (crit 2 times weapon dmg+sneak attack dmg+hunters mark dmg)+plus bonus dmg
? Or does Death strike only work on one attack. I feel like its all in one turn. then initiative.
You only get to sneak attack once per turn and crit will double all dice including hunters mark, sneak attack, and dread ambush dice.
But yes, death strike works for both hits.
