I'm currently working on 2 concepts for a BM ranger. One is a Kobold with a wolf companion. The other is halfling with a Pteranodon companion. 1st is a just making use of inherent pack tactic available to both so its an up-close melee fighting build the other is just a flying mount to just jet across the battlefield. If I go with the first I'll prolly take a 3 LVL dip in Cavelier fighter for the born to the saddle bonus. Will take the mounted combatant feat either way cause I can just direct all attacks to me and have fun with that. So any suggestions? Thanks a lot XD
For the first build, make sure the feat and cavalier features don't overlap too much. Could you get by just going straight ranger and a feat? If so that would add some extra hit points to your beast buddy.
Either way, don't forget to save your gold coins for some barding. The proficiency bonus of the ranger is added ON TOP OF the beast's AC! So calculate the beast's AC, dexterity, natural armor and/or barding, and then ADD your proficiency bonus on top of that! Big number!
Check with your DM on how the timing on your turn will be played out too. Depending on their interpretation of "It takes its turn on your initiative." the beast will either be more of a help to ONLY your team members or them and you.
I get ya but the things I get from the feat and the cavalier service different things so I think the dip it worth it XD as for the barding thanks for that, I didn't think about that XD and it will make it tanky as hell XD
As for the abilities Cavelier gives at 3rd lvl are
Born to the Saddle
Starting at 3rd level, your mastery as a rider becomes apparent. You have advantage on saving throws made to avoid falling off your mount. If you fall off your mount and descend no more than 10 feet, you can land on your feet if you’re not incapacitated.
Finally, mounting or dismounting a creature costs you only 5 feet of movement, rather than half your speed.
Unwavering Mark
Starting at 3rd level, you can menace your foes, foiling their attacks and punishing them for harming others. When you hit a creature with a melee weapon attack, you can mark the creature until the end of your next turn. This effect ends early if you are incapacitated or you die, or if someone else marks the creature.
While it is within 5 feet of you, a creature marked by you has disadvantage on any attack roll that doesn’t target you.
In addition, if a creature marked by you deals damage to anyone other than you, you can make a special melee weapon attack against the marked creature as a bonus action on your next turn. You have advantage on the attack roll, and if it hits, the attack’s weapon deals extra damage to the target equal to half your fighter level.
Regardless of the number of creatures you mark, you can make this special attack a number of times equal to your Strength modifier (minimum of once), and you regain all expended uses of it when you finish a long rest.

I'm not very familiar with the cavalier myself. I admit it! LOL!
The barding is awesome! That, auto dodge, the feat, and the fighter subclass will make you a force to be reckoned with!
Yeah thanks for the help XD
