I don't know if this has been done before, but I was planning on building a rogue whose family work as "Stress Testers" for various nobles. Basically, the nobles pay this family to try and bypass their security and guards. The noble gives the rogue a location and an item as the "mark," the rogue tries to get in and steal it, the guards try to stop them, and if the rogue succeeds they leave a calling card. Then the nobles get the item back, along with a list of weaknesses in their security, and a "performance review" of the guards.
I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to build this character. Particularly the background.
Sounds great. Depending on the campaign, they could also “spy” on other nobles either when visiting, banquets, balls - trade information with informants. Spread misinformation.
could be shadowy behind the scenes or a known figure. Lots of options with this.
This is fantastic! There's a lot of background options that would work. Starting as a noble or an inheritor would make sense since the people you're working for would trust you more. You could play it as a retired faction agent or urban bounty hunter who's looking for an easier life. There are lots of things you can do.
Thief or mastermind subclasses could work well depending on if you want to focus more on being able to quickly climb/pickl ocks etc or have more disguises, social interaction etc worked in. The disguise set, forgery kit and ability to mimic dialects are great for passing yourself off as someone else.
The downside to mastermind could be that its bonus action help feature could see little use if they're often doing this work solo, but that may not be an issue if you're not in a combat heavy situation or are working with a party in this.
The actor feat could also be good for disguises etc, if disguises to get into places is part of how they work.

The short answer? Build a rogue. Give consideration to infiltration skills and tools. All the rest is up to you. Though a thief subclass leans into somewhat already.
