Been working/playing with a character for a bit. He's already infiltrated the party once, got caught stealing all their magic items, blackmailed them for his life and they reached a point of mutual agreement where they can both help each other. Certainly not the most solid and secure relationship but it works.
The base of the character is a Rogue Arcane Trickster Lv 4, Variant Human for Actor Feat, and a Hat of Disguise/Gloves of Thievery that he used to impersonate a character that left the party for a bit. The fact that he can basically Disguise Self at will + Sound like that other trustworthy character made for quite a fun encounter. He is NOT a character built for combat and will NOT fight fairly - always prefer running away. He is never in his "undisguised" self in public and he want to keep it that way (I thought about taking Alter Self from Wizard any school later... Worth?). He is built for being a tour guide in a capital Las Vegas/New York sized, with tons of underground tunnels/black market places for him to thrive in...
That being said, he's thinking about his future as an information broker to better serve his objectives. Took his 5th Level (he just leveled up) in Cleric of Knowledge for two Expertise (Arcana and History for him made the most sense), Guidance and Sanctuary, Ritual Detect Magic (so I can get Find Familiar from Wizard instead of the Level 4 Detect Magic, very useful to find all the magic items of a party).
The plan for his future is to start taking 3 Level of Druid (Circle of the Land - Coast) for the Misty Step/Mirror Image, a few Wildshape options for even better Deception/running away potential. Then go back to Arcane Trickster up until he gets Reliable Talent (PC Level 15 at that point) on his 6 Expertise. He's gonna be Great at Performance (could make a great con artist with card tricks, magic show and good story telling capacity with illusions), History, Arcana, Stealth, Sleight of Hand (he's still a thief at core) and Insight (gotta be able to read a person). If he lives up to 20th Level, he should end up with 5 more Level in Druid to get Druid 8.
Ability Score are all for surviving/getting away, so 18 DEX, 20 WIS (for good DC on Sanctuary, Command, and all the Druid Control) 16 INT (OK illusion DC), 8 STR, 12 CON and 10 CHA. He doesn't get much ASIs so choices needed to be made.
I would like your opinion on the plan/build. I doubt he'll reach that high a level but I like to plan ahead.
Do you have ideas as to which spells would be must have? If he gets level 20, he would have LOTS of low levels (35 known, 11 cantrips) from Wizard (2 "Any school", up to 2nd Level), Cleric (1st Level with good DC from max WIS) and Druids (up to 4th Level). Is Rogue 11, Cleric 1, Druid 8 a decent multiclass mix for what he needs to achieve? Information gathering, perhaps even blackmailing, maybe spy, etc?
First off, love the idea of a information broker type of char, second of all i think that a Mastermind or Inquisitor Rogue would fit better for the char youre talking about, taking the cleric of knowledge was the right choice if you want some one whos good at investigationg/finding information. ive seen some builds out there that that are interesting, but i wouldnt recommend having more than than two types of classes, just cuz youd be spreading youself thin. my recommendation is Mastermind Rogue + Knowledge Cleric, maybe with a Shadow Touched feat. im a lil new to Dnd so these are my two cents.
I thought of going Mastermind but the appeal of an invisible Mage Hand was too strong. I didn't think of Inquisitive however, and now I kinda feel bad about that :D The background of the character made sense for the Arcane Trickster part (Illusions, good with Sleight of Hand for cardistry, street performances and cons).
In the plan of being hard to pin down and catch, Druid's wildshape felt like the best option. He will (already has maybe?) make powerful enemies and, being hard to catch or having strong allies will be a must for him. Potentially having access Scrying from Druid (Coast - though it's a bit far out) as a mean to gather information seems also very valuable, already having a few Wizard Spell (Find familiar, Shield) from Trickster part.
I recognize that he's spread thin currently and have no idea how long he'll survive... Disguise Self and Actor did get him pretty far (his bread and butter) but he'll need more powerful stuff.
So, for the future, I might end up going Druid Lv 10 (which would put the PC at Lv 15 - Rogue 4 + Cleric 1) - he'd become immune to poison/disease + more Druid spell slot. His Familiar being his Druid mentor (a Sprite), that'd also makes sense story wise. He could finish Rogue Lv 9 (that Trickster feature ain't bad).. or take some levels in Bard (Jack of all trade + Some nice spells)?
Still thinking and weighing the options but I doubt he'll get that far. However, my goal is to not die from a simple back stab in a dark alley!
i would say maybe a mix of bard and rogue would also be useful, if youre looking for poison immunity then there could be a race that could give you that. just think about 3 aspects that are the MOST important for your char and go with that. in my case i do like magic and did want to have some of it, but my char is a Investigator first than anything so i put pallid elf, inquisitive rogue and im going to add a dragon mark for a cantrip and a spell simply for utility and that really did solve all my problems. Bards have access to magic and the are some subclasses that are great in information gathering, inquisitive rogues are great for investigation but you could also use mastermind or soulknife or assassin (im biased towards rogues), but you can get creative. i would have to know his backstory to get a better picture though.
