Having some struggles with what to dip into. I'm not in love with the 20th feature of AT. I'm in a champagne where we plan a long term run.
My original plan was to take a 1st lvl dip in to wizard for some useful utility the mid levels as well as access into other magic items. That chr build is here:
But then I started thinning. What out there might be more "optimal".
Now the AT build will be centered on range and true strike, with other "addons" to help with that one big hit.
Sharpshooter for first feat.
Skulker for 8th or 10th lvl feat.
War caster for the opportunity to cast on an opportunity attack and add the true strike damage as well sneak attack.
Poisoner feat, for a further 2d8 when the encounter is right.
I'm even liking the idea of Shadow touched and taking wrathful smite for an up cast of 3d6 even 4d6, but that gets relegated to melee so not 100% it will be used enough to justify the feat.
I toyed with a fighter dip to 4th w AT 16. Negative sneak attack die drop and a couple nice features lost in AT. BUT gain fighting style, action surge, second wind, few HP, I toyed with doing Eldritch Knight for more of that spell utility.
Next idea was Gloom Stalker ranger to 4th. Same losses to AT, but gain the fighting style, few spells, hunters mark, dreadful strike is nice another 2d6 but with this build only usable one a day. I love the auto invisibility vs darkvision. But not at all in love with wisdom as another ability to address. Think I just talked my self out of this.
What level are you starting at? If 1st level, you have a long time to contemplate this and may even change based on the campaign.
In addition middle level are probably better comparisons due to the low % of activating high levels in a campaign that starts lower levels.
If you want to compare difference builds, you may want to drop all magic items. As an example, adding gloves of thievery can potentially hide a flaw in one of the builds due to the high bonus it gives.
