You don't have to. Solid rogue is fine. But, multiclass options are: samurai fighter for some for damage, hexblade warlock for some dark magic and to deal more damage (also some nice RP potential), swords bard for magic and the flourishes are nice.

I would also mention champion fighter for crits on 19 or 20, action surge and fighting style; also don't discount a shortsword and a shield as a fighting style. Or gloomstalker Ranger gets extra attacks and damage on the first round of combat to boost your assassinate ability and some spells. Divine wizards portent ability is very good, also spells, take things like shield, detect magic, invisibility; things that don't require saving throws or attack spells if you int is lower.
Just make sure you meet any class requirement found in chapter 6 of basic rules or players hand book, here.

My DM has given us the option multiclass. I'm currently running a level 8 assassin rogue.
I've never multiclassed before, and need some advice on what next class I should take that would fit a Changling assassin rogue.
