So I am multiclassing my AT into Artificer up to level 3 and taking Artillerist. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this type of build or general experience and advice that may help. I will say that the choice is in large part about Role-Playing and flexibility but I am also happy to maximize my potential within these choices.
Basic Info: lvl 7 Rogue, High Elf, 17 dex, crossbow expert feat, Booming Blade Cantrip. Playstyle is a mix of ranged attacks with hand crossbow and booming blade when up close. I found that I really like booming blade but at this point it is too inconsistent and getting up into melee is tough because I am not that tough. End goal is to play a mix of tanky ranged fighter with hand crossbow, shield and protector bot OR Melee fighter using booming blade, shield, shield spell, and a cannon that fits the fight. Booming blade as action and Cannon as action has a pretty high potential damage output. The Artificer class is far more useful for the melee approach but I am ok with that sacrifice.
No matter what I am going Artificer at level 8. This is in part due to RP reasons but it is also about team synergy and my playstyle. I like the idea of throwing in a faerie fire "grenade" to start a fight or drop a heal here or there when needed. After that I am not sure. The shield will help a lot when I go melee and faerie fire will hopefully help with getting advantage (and sneak) on targets. So I am still trying to figure out the plan after that.
Plan 1: Level 9 go Rogue and get Elven Accuracy feat, choose Find Familiar spell. Level 10 go Rogue and get Sneak Attack die and Magical Ambush. Level 11 and 12 go Artificer.
Plan 2: Level 9 and 10 go Artificer to get to the booming blade/cannon combo ASAP then go back to rogue.
I think that plan one is the best. I would say that you should ask to reassign ability scores: just switch out intelligence and dex, and then you'll be better. You can have max dex at level 9, and it is (I think) a much better idea, especially for artificer. I think this is a very cool build and idea.
