Which draconic heritage would be best for a draconic bloodline sorcerer? Races I have in mind are tiefling, elf, halfling, variant human, and maybe Yuan-ti 🤔
UPDATE: slightly leaning towards either halfling or Yaun-ti , still not sure of heritage though.....
I'm wondering what exactly you mean by "best" in this case. Red or Gold are decent choices because so many of the most common offensive spells are fire-based, taking advantage of the charisma bonus to damage, but the trade-off is that many monsters have fire resistance. Ice and Lightning dragons allow you to lean into other offensive magics, but I think there are fewer options (note that with a 2014 sorcerer, you have a rather limited number of known spells, so the lack of options isn't so bad). In a similar vein, if you go with a Yuan-ti, Black or Copper will give you bonus damage to your poison spells, but then you completely negate the benefits of elemental affinity since you already have poison resistance. In the 2014 version, this actually isn't so bad since you'd need to spend a sorcery point to get that resistance anyway, but in 2024 that requirement is likely to be gone, so it might be a slightly harder pill to swallow.
In the end, I guess I'm just going to be "that guy" and say that the "best" draconic heritage is the one that suits what you want for your backstory.
The "optimal" one of those will aways be red, gold or brass with runners up being white and silver. When it comes to which race is best, again "optimally" v-human or half-elf for all ancestors, tiefling's infernal/fire stuff synergizes well with the fire bloodlines.
What about in terms of storytelling, what are some good options for how a character came to have a "Draconic bloodline"? The 2024 Draconic Sorcerer (what know about it) sounds fun. I'm unsure if I want to commit to having the species choice have a Draconic tie-in (dragonborn, tiefling, possibly Kobold are the ones that come to mind for me). It seems like the angle of having an ancestor who made a deal with a dragon might be the easiest to work with. I guess it wouldn't be an option for a character to have made a deal with a dragon, or I guess the character would be more of a Warlock than a Sorcerer,. I've never done a backstory that goes much into ancestors/genealogy/the distant past, (it might not be my first choice) I'm assuming that you probably try to make that part brief and vague if you go that route.
I believe the whole "ancient dragon dies and permanently shapes and changes the land around its grave" is still in the game, so spending a bunch of time there without realizing could infuse you with draconic magic (potentially). Specific blessings (curses?) of high level dragons, or even the dragon gods, early in a family's bloodline. Drinking dragon blood in some sort of special potion (realizing it or not). Or you could just keep it a complete mystery and work with your DM throughout the game to develop it together... or just leave it. It certainly doesn't have to be genetic in the sense that your great-great-grandmother had relations with a dragon.

You got a point
Alright then, thank you
