I'm new to the forums and haven't played d&d for about 15 years so I'm finding my feet again!
I've been writing the backstory to a very interesting character that i'm pretty excited about. The only problem is i think i might be spreading him too thin.
The basic backstory is that on his coming of age day my character created a magical effect (TBD). This reveals his draconic bloodline and leads to him being outcast.
I want him to be a dwarf so that i can use the natural ability to wear armour and swing big axes to have him as a sort of battle-mage.
As part of the writing process i had my character actually meet his dragon ancestor (ancient god/brass dragon TBD) who explained the source of his magics.
The DM (also her first time DM'ing) and I thought it would be really cool for the same dragon to notice his potential after he hit level 2/3 sorcerer and say that he can either continue on the path of self discovery or, if he is willing to accept it, learn with the dragon's help; thus starting a warlock pact with the dragon. (homebrew ancient dragon patron)
At this stage i was thinking he would keep 2/3 levels of sorcerer but level up for the rest of the game as warlock. But still swing a bloody great axe when needed witht he advantage of say False Life to boost the HP.
We only have a very small party of this character, a rogue and a bard, so i figured some kind of magic tank might be useful.
Would a battle sorcelock/warserer be a silly idea, or have stumbled upon something kind of cool and awesome?
is your homebrew dragon warlock pact OtherworldlyPatron or PactBoon also is XGE book allowed? Does it have 2 be a 2handed axe or can it be axe/shield to. what armor proficiency you current build has?
We're still designing characters and working out which books to invest in before the game starts, so XGE would be allowed I'm sure. I just like to have a rough idea where i might go.
I'm fairly sure i need a hand free for casting so at the moment (lvl1 sorcerer) he's just rocking a battleaxe with a small hand axe to throw when needed.
Armour proficiency is light and medium (currently have in in half plate)
I'm mainly concerned either im spreading him way too thin or i'm making him way too OP. Part of the pact I've written lets him maintain access to sorcerer spells even as he levels in warlock. I'm thinking this might have been a silly idea.
Yeah pact of boon lvl 3 was just making sure i wasn't thinking of something else.
If XGE allowed you can pick hexblade (warlock) and go one handed weapon/shield making one weapon (you can change it per long rest) modifier CHA based instead of the normal one. This make you tankier as for the free hand you right but you can use your "free object interaction" to draw/sheet you weapon per your turn, allowing you to switch into casting or fightin mode. Or you can also use a staff it has arcana focus so you can cast spell with the staff and it can be used as a quarterstaff but this might not how you invision your dwarf (a battleaxe or warhammer just look more badass dwarf you can homebrew it that the weapon has runes on it and the dwarf can use the weapon as an arcane focus) so you can just keep switching with your axe whenever you wanna hack or cast.
I would get sorcerer to 4 just for the ASI.
He mostly a caster but tankier and has melee backup, however the higher level he get his magic damage will outshine his melee weapon damage.
Also the Warcaster feat is a must for any battle mage that will be in melee and also allows you to cast the somatic portions of a spell even when your hand is holding a weapon or shield.
Since it replacing OtherworldlyPatron the suggestion before doesnt work since it used the same to get hexblade acces. This mean you only have acces to light armor and simple weapon this limit your melee ability in both offense and defence.
Pact of the Blade of PactBoon can atleast make you proficient on the 1 weapon you have a pact with. However you baddass 2 handed great axe (use STR only) gonna have to replaced with a 1 handed rapier or dual wielding scimitars (they use STR or DEX). The reason for this axe need STR, armor need DEX, gonna need CHA for castin and CON for concentration/hp basicly spreading out stats way to far. Also you don't have shield proficiency.
I am assuming anything that doesnt have "At level X" you got acces at level 1. If that the case that ALOT for just 1 lvl in warlock. Also you missin one for 10th level.
Dragon's Charm, Dragon's Slumber are you using those the same as the spells and use rules how spells work but doesnt use spell slot and charge per rest instead? Dragon's Fortitude I would change it to if you roll above your DC you drop to 1hp instead. I would scratch the recovery it basicly a beefed up one of sorcerer subclass and at lvl1 you basicly coming back half/full hp. Warding Wind the chance that this ever used non-existence unless the DM like trowing into alot dragon lairs. Draconic Sheild Broken feat, you can basicly fist a martial fighter to death in a 1 v 1. Give it a limit amount us, need reaction, resistance not immmunity, no recovery. Dragons Awesome Presence Either effect everybody (including allies) or reduce the radius to 30 feet, Make the DC based on your CHA or lower flat dc to 15. limit it to once per short or long rest. Heart of the Dragon change it to resistance to fire/radiant. As far my knowledge go i don't think any PC have Immunity as a permanent buff, I feel this also gonna be nightmare for your DM because monster that has there main nasty attacks based on those elements will be peanuts against you, you could possible defeat that baddass monster alone because it can simple can't damage you.
All abilities are based off the monster sheet for an ancient brass dragon, so i might have to tone it down a little!
Dragon's charm/slumber: yes they work as spells but don't take up slots and charge on the length of rest specified. I did worry this might be too many spells learned so suggestions for how to make a feat along a similar theme would be appreciated.
Fortitude: DM's suggestion: On reaching 0hp, at start of next turn if con check is passed regain consciousness and gain CHA modifier value back as HP. At levels 6 and 14 gain an additional d4 of HP. Would this work better? Loose the level increases?
Warding wind: I think we've got a wording complication. It's essentially radius efect push-back action. I've re-worded this to put in V2:
A strong wind blows around you. Each creature within 60 feet must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be pushed 15 feet away and knocked prone. Those behind solid, immovable cover are immune. Those who hit solid objects, such as walls, columns, large rocks etc take 1d10 of bludgeoning damage
Draconic shield only last for one round. I should state that it makes the character immobile whilst in effect. Can only be used one per long rest. Is immunity to fire for one round of combat really too broken? This is the Lvl 10 Feat.
Presence: yup, I totally get you there and will make those changes. Thanks! It is already limited to i think a long rest but short is better.
Heart of dragon: yeah I hate this feat but needed a l14 ability!!! My character won't ever reach this as his multi with sorcerer buy any suggestions for a better top-tier dragon based warlock feat would be appreciated.
Dragon's charm/slumber: As long they spells per rest and still have to follow spell rules like costing action to cast or have to keep concentration if the spell says it it fine. In early level it might be strong because the amount but in return later on they drop in usefullness when you have better spells to concentrate on and you can't upcast it.
Fortitude: sure if your DM fine with it try it out it should be fine the d4 increase at those level should be trivial at those levels.
Warding wind: yeah rereading it idk how i forgot the "you can use it in combat however" that my fault for reading to fast. The feat fine
Draconic shield: it not the fire per 1 round but couple other reason. main was the "Shielding you from physical damage" i interpreted this to immune to physical damage be it melee or ranged bows coupling that it was unlimited, fighter and archer simply couldnt even scratch you in 1 v 1. That being said if it only 1 per long rest for your warlock patron 10 lvl feat you can keep the original one just adding the resource limit and reaction to deploy/activate it.
Heart of dragon: I think the feat fine on it own as long it not immunity. The wings mobility on it own pretty handy you get to fly that doesn't use you concetration unlike the spell and 60 feet make you very mobile especially for slower character like dwarfs, You get acces to whole airspace while the rest stuck on the ground. the 2 elemental resistence nice bonus and dragon wing on a PC just so eyecatchy.
If you go with a Hill Dwarf the bonus HP they get for going up a level makes him basically a d10 class as a draconic sorcerer if he uses fixed hp for leveling. If he goes Hexblade Warlock as others suggested he will have light and medium armor and shield. But if he has a good Dex his base AC is 13+ Dex bonus which may end up equal or even better then armor. Warcaster is very important feat for this build. If he uses Pact of the Blade at Warlock 3 He can make every weapon he summons his Hexblade and he can ignore his Strength from then on.
