Old character died but I had enough time to learn dig the sorcerer class and im going to create a new pure sorcerer. He will be level 5. I have my spells nailed down for the most part, Chromatic orb, shield, misty step, counter spell and fireball. Im hung up on whether to take sleep to hold person for my last spell. My charisma is a 20. What do you guys think?
Sleep doesn’t scale very well unless you upcast it using higher level spell slots. I’d lean towards a concentration spell, but Hold Person fails if your target makes its save and your target gets one save a round unless you Twin Spell it or use a higher level spell slot.
Have you considered Levitate? You can Twin Spell it and it’s useful in combat as a control spell to lift a dangerous melee opponent up so he can’t move and is a target instead of an opponent, it’s useful to get you up out of reach of melee, and it’s useful in exploration.
I'd dump Chromatic Orb for Absorb Elements. Shield is only half of the defense you need. Might think about Mirror Image. As far as utility, I like Invisibility and Enhance Ability, for RP purposes. You can Twin both. I also think Levitate as mentioned above is good but like Minor Illusion being Boss, it's just not my character's style. Get all the use out of Twin you can because past 4th I think it just is too deep an investment in SP.
Suggestion is great. Combat:Tell a bad guy to remove their armor and get rid of weapons in combat(taking off armor is about 10 minutes). RP:tell the shopkeep that all the magic items are free to you.
I'm actually "starting" a 5th level Sorcerer in out campaign and picking a list of spells also. I'm trying to future proof the choices because spell choices and swap become very limited. After a talk with the DM we decided to stay away from UA material and try Wild Mage. Everything being DM/campaign this is the list I'm looking at starting with.
Cantrips are Firebolt, Light, Mage Hand, Prestidigitation and one yet to be chosen . . .
Absorbing Elements
Shield
Invisibility
Mirror Image
Haste
Lightning Bolt
I'd rather have a cantrip lightning bolt and Fireball but we're not reskinning and I'd like to have a variety of elemental attacks available. Using the first two levels for defense and utility spells. I haven't sold myself on these quite as I'd can't decide to switch one out for Misty Step or wait for Thunder Step or Dimension Door. I think Misty Step is nice put not enough impact considering the limited number of spells a sorcerer gets. I also hoping to obtain Elven Chain, so I think I might be over-investing in defensive spells and might swap out Mirror Image, leaving the level one spells as emergency reaction spells.
All that said I think Enhance Ability might be about the best Utility Spell and needs a place in the list.
I’d pick a cantrip that has a saving throw and a damage type other than fire so you’ll have 2 damage types from cantrips and the option of a saving throw or an attack roll for cantrips. Other than that I like your choices.

Thanks Tim, I was thinking about it and decided I needed something that gave him a theme of being closer to a sorcerer who uses the elements of nature (his mother is a druid/shaman for his tribe). Also, it's to easy to get focused on the effectiveness of fire spells. I'm not against save spells, I just prefer cantrip attacks that use a to hit roll. I am taking your advice and adding Ray of Frost as a secondary attack cantrip with a nice side effect that doesn't get a save (yay).
That has led me to take another look at Prestidigitation . . . right now it's a real toss up between that (which at least one other party member has but I love the utility) and Minor Illusion which I haven't played with but keep hearing it just rocks. We have a very fair DM, or I wouldn't be interested in trying Wild Magic. So I expect not to get unfairly nerfed for being creative.

Enlarge and reduce, then twinned spells to buff all the front line fighters.
Also known as CrafterB and DankMemer.
Here, have some homebrew classes! Subclasses to? Why not races. Feats, feats as well. I have a lot of magic items. Lastly I got monsters, fun, fun times.

Invisibility has great utility.

Thanks for you input,
Pyrotechnics is a great 2nd level utility and combat spell if you or someone in the party can give you a reliable source of non-magic Fire.
Web is a great control spell. Do you count that as "utility"?
And Blade Ward cantrip Quickened can be a lifesaver if you get mobbed.
