lvl 5 Tomelock fiend patron and I am consistently laying down the most damage in our party. Barbarian/wizard/ranger/druid. Out of combat is where I excel though lol
Best class probably not, you are just so limited on spell slots and invocations will only help so much. Warlocks might just be the best 1 or 2 level dip when multiclassing.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
Don't get me wrong, warlocks are awesome, but they lack combat ability (unless you're a hexblade). Role-playing wise they are great, but if you want to powergame with an arcane spellcaster, I would advise wizard.
Paladins are fairly complex. Rangers are not. It's pretty easy to see how a player who doesn't know how to get the most out of a paladin might be happier with a simpler ranger.

Yeah maybe it was the case, i doubt it, but who knows.
I know a guy on the other hand that he ALWAYS play a rogue, no matter the game Divinity original Sin I & II? rogues, TESO?, Rogue, D&D? you guessed it rogue.
Now he is always about the "Roleplaying" (even tho is acting and RP sucks massively but whatever, we usually don't hold it against him, except when he start to tell us our RP sucks...).
In his mind knowing and learning the rules is Meta-Gaming, and it ruins the RP, case in point, when he proposed to DM for us with a new game that was more Fallout like, and i tried to get my hands on the core rulebook to learn how it plays, he throwed a tantrum, cause i was and i quote" Gonna learn the rules to perfection, and be too good and ruin his RP and Plot"...
Reminds me of a guy in our 40k players club who once said to another dude during a competion "You cheat!!!, you Know the rules!!!", wich the dude obviously said as a joke, but it always stuck to me.
In his mind, a game can only be enjoyed when you have no clues on how its played..., same happened when he introduced us to Path of Exils, and since all of us are experienced with ARPG's, we quickly left him in the dust( when we started he was lvl 18, after 12 hours we where all lvl 35 and he was lvl 20...), cause while we played the game how it is meant, he was just frolicking around admirring the environements( wich isn't a bad thing, POE's environements are nice), and was yelling at us that we where going too fast and missing the true importance of the game..., yup...
So that guy is allergic to learning the rules...
Even for his Rogue, that he plays in the CoS that i'm DMing for them, he chose an Arcane Trickster has class, started to get spells that he should not have (Arcane trickster spell selections are limited to certains schools, and the 3 first spells he got, 2 where from schools of magic he couldn't choose from..., but since i din't catch on it quick enough i let it slide, it was find familiar and Ice Knife, Familiar was more for Rp reasons cause he had a Pet rat named Caca (poop in french...) and the Ice knife was the only really "big" damage dealer he had...
But also he NEVER uses any of the other AT abilities, the Mage Hand i think he used it only ONCE at lvl 6 when another player reminded him that he could use it to disarm a Trap out of harming distance if anything would go off, and since then 3 levels later, he still haven't used it...
Now in another campaign that another guy of our group DM, we're doing Avernus.
And the same guy wasn't interested in anything really, but he din't want to play a rogue once again, so we suggested him an Artificer, the Artificer at the time was still the UA one, before Eberron was available.
So he went with it...
And plays it EXACTLY like he plays his rogue, sneaking around, hiding behind someone else or something, and only getting out of his cover to use is repeating X-Bow( just like his Arcane trickster in CoS) and OCCASIONALY use a spell( now in the earlier levels when we reached avernus, a good chunk of his spell list was useless, cause he choose the Artillerist class, so lots of fire spells...) AND only used the Arcane turret like 3 times, cause even tho he hardly casts any spells, he doesn't want to waste Spells slots to use the turret (now before Eberron release the duration of the turrets where pathetic, but after, they last for an Hour, during a dungeon crawl or fight, it is good!, but still)
Also when Eberron released, there where changes made to the Artificer, Artilerist lost the extra attack feature they had, but since you could use a BA to fire the eldritch cannon AND you action to attack/fire a spell, i mean, its pretty much the same.
But since he din't like it he went to great lenghts to get his "second" attack back, taking the X-bow expert feat so that he could BA attack with his X-Bow.
At this point we just where like "Kay whatever, since you don't listen to us..." and he still find ways to complains that compared to us all, he feels pathetic, we point to him what he's doing and NOT doing, but dismiss it has us been Meta-gamers...
SO yeah, there's weird people around...

"Normality is but an Illusion, Whats normal to the Spider, is only madness for the Fly"
He complains that D&D 5e is too complex(!!!) and there's too many things to keep tracks off and it feels more like a video game than a real Role playing game..., lucky i din't start them with 4th edition before i got into 5th..., **** sakes that would have been something...
To be more simple and easy for him you should just throw dices when you want to do something, and the Dm decides if its enough...
Thats it..., no class, no structure, No DC/AC no HP nothing, No Ability scores/skills, just "throw 4D10's *roll 5 , 3, 1 , 4* "Ok so you manage to do what you wanted to do easely" so i'm like "ok imma gonna do the same action again and apparently i need a 13 minimum to do it" *roll 4D10's= 6, 3, 1, 3* " 13 again!" "ah shucks, you miss it this time" and im "Wut?...why?" "because, no questions"...
So we tried his way, not only whas the story bland and annoying as ****, but he managed to take away any player agency, from nowhere, even to it was not in my backstory, ther's an Ex-girlfriend that comes from nowhere, she's the kidn to get in trouble and i need to white knight her from her new boyfriend, and i'm like "dude wtf?, where does this come from?" and he's like" don't worry its part of the plot you'll see it will be great"...
I was like "k..." so i'm trying to balling out of the situation, i ask the adress and says that i will help her evict the arsehole out so that can go back, and off course..., she starts to be touchy and clingy and be reminescent of the "past" and about us, i know the guy is into shitty soaps, wich is not my jam so i try to move along and be like "ok girl don't worry, just go someplace, and i'll take care of it", i spent 45 mins to get out of her clutches to get the plot moving before he decides that she wants to kiss me and makes things weird...
To no avail, in his kinda Vampire the masquerade-like world with contemporary world and esoterism, his sole focus for an hour and a half, was the dead but maybe rekindeling romance between my character and his "ex" that he never had to begin with...
We've never let him Dm ever again...
Ah but enough of this, i'm derailling the thread with my rant...
They're cool, but wizards are the better spellcaster in my opinion. Hear me out. Wizards get wish. Wizards can also be less squishy than popular opinion holds. A bladesinger or abjurer is really hard to kill. Wizards get very good subclasses. Of course, this is only my opinion, you're welcome to disagree, but those are my thoughts on the matter.

That's not the point of the poll, though. It's about the class, not the caster strength. Every Warlock player knows wizards and Sorcerors and clerics are the better pure casters. That's never been in question. It's about the cool factor and intrinsic rp flavor.

Flavor/rp wise they do have more potential, I have played many warlocks and they have been just as interesting, if not more, to play. However, wizards are and will always be my favorite class (but warlocks and artificers are tied for a close second)

Same thing applies: he's clearly not playing it well or doesn't get opportunities from the DM to do so

Appropriate for a Warlock.
Warlocks can do some things thematically, that other classes just can't. It's one of the most flexible chassis out there. as far as playstyle goes.

To be honest ANY class can be seen as weak or pathetic if not played correctly.
I know someone who said that Paladins are dumb cause all they do is wack stuff like a fighter and occasionally do a Smite..., yup not even kidding...
He changed it for a...Non-UA Ranger, and said it was way better...
To this day i don't now if he was been serious or if he was trolling...
