So the other day I was playing a game called sundered and got the idea for a eldritch blast invocation and because there is no place to put homebrew invocations (as well as other class feature options like arcane shots, invocations, maneuvers ect.) I will post/talk about it here
The idea is that it increases the damage to 1d12 but changes it to a melee spell attack with a range of 5 feet, I have discussed this with a few people at my table and we have come to the consensus that it is pretty balanced trading the range for advrage of 1 damage, also makes quite a few of the invocations for eldritch blast non useable (pulling/pushing/range buffs) it also doesn't put hexblade melee weapons out of the job because of the lifedrinker and eldritch smite invocations, the logic is even with two attacks the your charisma mod 4 times added to your damage comes out to be about the same as 4d12 with cha mod four times, and hexblade can further outdo that damage with polearm master to your cha mod 6 times, you can also use great weapon master with a glaive halberd or Pike, on the range side of things lifedrinker and eldritch smite also works with ranged weapons and you can do tons of damage with a hand crossbow while using the crossbow expert and sharpshooter feats (crossbow expert gives you bonus attack with a hand crossbow so 3 attacks)
With the technical math stuff out of the way I think it's a fun idea for role players who want to use some type of energy sword or form claws of eldritch energy (a little like the primal savagery cantrip) and will be alot of fun people to use witch is the end goal for a D&D game!
What do you guys think?
For those who still think it's too strong I will brake down all the math in detail now using the advrage damage at level 20 assume high end gear and 20 charisma
My eldritch "slash" with agonizing blast
To hit +14-17 (using rod of pact keeper +3 and or a wand of the war mage +3) damage 1d12+1d6(hex)+5(charisma modifier)x4=44 force and 12 neurotic damage, total 56 damage (extra 24 if hexblade curse for new total of 80)
Greatsword hexblade
To hit +14 (+3 weapon, minus -5 for GWM)
Damage 2d6+1d6+ charisma modifier + lifedrinker (cha mod again) + proficiency bonus (hexblade curse) + magic weapon bonus = 40 slashing, 16 necurtic total of 56 (with great weapon master a additional 20 slashing damage, if bonus attack from GWM triggers another 30 slashing and 8 necurtic)
Polearm hexblade
To hit +14 (+3 weapon with a -5 if GWM)
Almost the same as above but with a guarentee of a extra 1d4 bonus attack with fixings as above
Hand crossbow
To hit +14-19 (+3 weapon and if the hexblade took a one level dip into fighter for archery fighting style and using +3 ammo, -5 if sharpshooter)
Damage 1d6+1d6(hex)+charisma modifier+charisma modifier(lifedrinker)+proficiency bonus, times 3 with chance of sharpshooter= 90-120 damage (lumping everything because tired of doing everything explained, your get it by now lol)
The numbers for the melee weapon dont even include the extra damage potential for the eldritch smites witch is ALOT of extra damage (also I forget the exact numbers for eldritch smite, it's like 2d8 force + 1d8 extra per spell level so with level 5 slots it's like 6d8 damage and that is without a crit and hexblades crit on a 19, the long and short of it is hexblades have insane damage output when using a polearm or hand crossbow!)
When I started I was expecting this to be a bad idea, but I do not think it has problems.
Keep in mind that there are some pretty strong stuff you can already do with eldritch blast. The sorlock is a great example. Basically they constantly use the sorcerer spells to quicken eldritch blasts, which boost the damage per round to a hue amount. And they get to recover the spells on a short rest.
well like I said its mostly for fun and its pretty balanced, it is a little stronger than just a hexblade swinging a greatsword but when you get into massive numbers the polearm hexblade or xbow hexblade leaves it far in the dust (matter of fact the xbow hexblade can take a two level dip in fighter for 5 attacks XD)
this does remind me of the old Hideous Blow invocation from 3.5e, you'd use you action to make a melee attack, if it hit you did your eledritch blast damae in addition to any weapon damage although should be noted Eldritch blast was a single ray in 3.5e with a6oft range and did 1d6 damage at first level scalling to 9d6 at 20th level.
