I was looking at the hexblade and thought to myself, I can choose pact of the blade on top of the hex blade? is it a good idea though? So i decided to come and ask here if you all have an idea. Not a min maxer but still don't want to feel useless. Any tips?

I mean, Pact of the Blade is the obvious choice if you're going to be optimizing the Hex Warrior feature. It's not required but expands your options. Pact Blade is only way to get a two-handed Hexblade weapon, plus the new Improved Pact Weapon and other invocations, along with making your weapon automatically magical to ignore nearly all resistances and immunities. Note, however, that the Hexblade's other class features work even if you never swing a sword (they work for "attacks" and not just "weapon attacks"), so if you prefer to bring along a familiar or tome and use Eldritch Blast that's cool.

Plus Eldritch Smite requires Pact Weapon, and with Improved Pact Weapon you can smite using a longbow and knock adult dragons out of the sky.

I usually go with a theme. A hexblade user that doesn't use his blade sounds bit weird. But thanks for the tips.

I completely didn't realize eldritch smite worked with ranged weapons too, though the fact you can only do it a couple times is less appealing....unless you multiclass to get more slots

It only works with Pact Magic slots. It's a crazy strong ability. You can reliably knock adult dragons out of the sky; no save, no Legendary Resistance. You can also reliably knock down a Storm Giant with 29 STR and +14 Athletics.

I am very sad that I won't be able to make a net with my pact boon ( even after I have improved pact boon) so I can have an eldritch net
You can always ask your DM, though it kinda feels weird but now i think about it it seem to have to have almost perma CC if it fails the save.

I'm currently playing a Hexblade Chain warlock, and I think it works quite well.
I started with the intention of Hexblade Blade--really because I liked the 'Raven Queen' flavoring of Hexblade, and I liked the idea of insta-sword...I've always liked the concept of walking around seemingly unarmed in a D&D world :) Anyway, I actually got to 3rd level and Blade Pact. But then the party reshuffled--a couple of players left, a couple of new players came in, and the other player (all of them new to D&D besides me and the DM) wanted to switch characters as well, now that she knew more about the game.
I went from being one of the ones relied on in melee to hanging out with two rangers and a cleric. So while I wanted to keep my character, I asked the DM if I could retcon to Warlock 2/Bard 1 (I'd been doing a lot of research in character into various topics, and telling stories in my 'old jaded detective' persona). Plus, I thought a more utility focus would be handier with this new party makeup.
Anyway, tl/dr, I went from playing a melee role to playing a ranged attack/utility role. So I kept Hexblade because I still liked the Raven Queen patron. But for more utility, I went Chain.
What I've found is that HB + Chain makes me very versatile. I have martial weapons, so when I get into melee, a long sword + Green Flame Blade + Hex Warrior (Hex Warrior works just fine with a longsword swung with two hands) is still a pretty good attack. And with a party of 4, it's hard to avoid melee much of the time. But with my familiar flying around, I am much more useful than just a melee basher. (Add in Bard, and I'm even more useful all around.)
What makes it work thematically is we're playing up the 'mysterious Raven Queen' and less the 'maker of magical weapons' part. Basically, from my character's perspective, my patron is some mysterious power called the Raven Queen, and she helped me once...for reasons I do not understand. I'm not even entirely sure what she is...or what this familiar is she sent to help me. So there's no implied "should be focused on a weapon" theme for me.

Improved Pact Weapon allows creating a shortbow, longbow, light crossbow, or heavy crossbow.

Oh right! cause not only does it deal solid damage, but it knocks it prone!

magic net you can? if it counts as a weapon and is magic you can make it a pact weapon. Do nets not count as weapons?
