Pretty new to 5e and I was hoping to pick your brains. One of my players is going to be playing an Aasimar Warlock with Celestial Pact. I want her to flush out her backstory quite a bit and as part of her Pact I was hoping to draw that into our campaign. She has picked a Deva as her Patron and we are thinking that the Patron wants her to a) find a magic item and b) use that item to destroy a certain fiend.
We are fine with finding the names of the Deva / Fiend but what I wanted was some ideas on magic items (homebrew or from DMG / other book) that would fit this scenario. I am leaning towards a Talisman of Pure Good but was hoping some of you will have something unexpected / off-the-wall / pure genius! She's done a great job of flushing out the backstory to this point using the new XGtE tables. If you haven't used them yet - can get some great starting points with it. Thanks!
Well, you could always make some kind of holy splinter of some sort. Such as a piece of a sacred tree shattered by a bolt of lightning, and treat it as some kind of magic wand for the most part. That gives you an opportunity to flesh out more of the relationship between the Deva patron and the fiend that the warlock was recruited to destroy. Perhaps the tree was one the Deva nurtured, which can channel some of its power more effectively for the Warlock. Or maybe the bolt or whatever that destroyed the tree was due to the machinations of the fiend, making it more of a poetic revenge kind of tale.
I don't think 5e has detailed the artifact itself, but its a major artifact with solid history behind it that you can work into your game, and comes with anti-demon measures on a rather high level. As well, seven parts means that it can be an ongoing quest with multiple layers and directions before you even begin to think of powerful demon minions moving to obstruct as well.
If you don't want the Rod of Seven Parts, do consider some kind of regalia, like the one Thor hammer rip off in the DMG. You need to collect (and attune) gauntlets, belt and the hammer itself to get everything working. This kind of artifact collection still gives you a lot of directions to go with the fetch quest.
Oh! Here's an idea. Heck, even if you wanted to keep Talisman of Good as one of the items, you could make the Book of Exalted Deeds and a Holy Avenger as a third - the three iconic Holy McGuffins. When used together, they form a blade, book and chain trinity like the warlock has, and you can tweak things to run that line as well. Blend all three in as a kind of theme. Or, require there to be two other Celestial Warlocks that have the other two artifacts, and all three need to be operated at the same time to take down your fiend. Think rescue missions. Think escorting. Think rivalry and love interests! You might need to come up with a celestial familiar or maybe some Invocations, but its an idea.
Thanks for the ideas guys. I really like the idea of the Rod of Seven Parts as this will give years of adventure ideas for the party! Might adjust it to a few less pieces so that her storyline doesn't dominate the campaign though. I think I will take both your ideas and meld them together.

The Rod of Seven Parts.
