Hi all, I am playing around with an idea for a character & I've decided to take a 2 level dip into Wizard (to get spells w/o sacrificing Assassin Rogue for Arcane Trickster) Interested to get your opinions on the best 2nd level Wizard (subjective, I know). Also interested what you would suggest if I was to go to Wizard 4 (adding those final 2 at the end of the build below).
I imagine the build to be an Assassin Rogue, Battle Master Fighter, Wizard. Playing roughly 65-70% at range & 30-35% up close & personal.
Probably going to go Rogue 4 first to get Crossbow Expert feat, then Fighter 2 for Action Surge/2nd Wind, then Wizard 2 (before then taking 2 more in Rogue (6) for Uncanny Dodge/Expertise, & 4 more in Fighter for Battle master/Alert feat/Extra Attack/Sharpshooter feat). I don't plan to take anymore levels of Wizard unless we go past level 14 (Rogue 6, Fighter 6, Wizard 2)
I'm thinking maybe: - Chronurgy Magic for Chronal Shift (forcing an enemy/ally re-roll) & Temporal Awareness (Adding INT bonus to my Initiative, making Assassinate even more consistent). - School of Divination for Portent (replace any attack roll, saving throw, or ability check made by myself or a creature that I can see with one of 2 foretelling rolls done after a long-rest). - War Magic for Arcane Deflection mainly for the +4 to saving throws (the +2 to AC reaction means less as I can Uncanny Dodge at Rogue 5)
So, any thoughts on the best 2nd level Wizard? And as above, same question but if I was to go Wizard 4? (adding those final 2 at the end of the build above).
For this particular build and play style, I strongly recommend War Magic. You have your basis covered for attack, offense and damage. Your main weakness will probably your low AC, medium HP and terrible saving throws. Shield and Absorb Elements mitigate part of that. War Magic is the missing piece to complement that.

Go War Magic and never go back.
Thanks for the feed back!
Yeah, apart from DEX Saves & to a lesser extent INT Saves, I'd rest easier with a bit more of a Saves buff.
Granted, Portent however can help with this - and can also be more widely/frequently utilized.
I second Bladesinger, especially if you're playing up close & personal. Having martial skill as a wizard is almost broken. War Magic is a close second.
For me Bladesinger doesn't even make the shortlist as it doesn't add much to this build (I'm only taking a 2 lvl dip).
- This character works mainly at range, and when I do get up close it will be with a dagger/hand crossbow in the shadows. - I already have proficiency in armour & all the weapons I might use. - Of the spells I get access to in the 2 level dip, I won't be taking any concentration spells (maybe detect magic, but that will be out of combat use) so the boost on CON checks to keep concentration isn't of value.
The boost to AC is pretty good though! And the extra 10ft speed would come in useful. War Magic however... I do agree that this must be in the conversation.
I'd go war magic. I think the bonus to your saving throws will be more useful than adding your INT mod to your AC.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.

Yeah, I think War Magic makes the most sense.
Thanks for the input everyone!
