So the idea I have for this character is that he a wizard that has multiple personalities and each personality has different abilities.
So one part of the idea and partially why I chose wizard as the class is that he could change subclass based on the personality and the parts of the idea I wanted some help with is why his personality would change and what some of the personalitys and subclasses should be.
The personalitys and subclasses I have so far are-
Order of the scribe/war mage (depends on the setting) - he is the core personality
Evocation - pyromaniac
Divination - arrogant and mysterious (thinks he knows everything and is better than everyone because of it)
illusion - super charismatic scam artist. The kind of person that you know you shouldn't trust but can't help but trust.
So that's everything I have for now let me know what you think. I have some other ideas brewing but that is for a different day.
This is definitely a you & DM partnership. Neat idea, not sure about execution nor how well it helps the party as teamwork * expectation "consistently" will work.
This is an idea that pops up from time to time. First is to remember that having multiple personalities is a serious condition, and making it into a game mechanic is not really good form.
I agree with the above poster that it’s an ask your DM question, but my answer would be no. Wizards are already incredibly flexible. You don’t get to Swiss Army knife your character even more. There are always trade offs in choosing your subclass, switching between them to fit a situation will make an already powerful class unbalanced; you don’t get to do everything all the time, that’s just part of the game.
Yeah, that sounds pretty broken. I know they aren’t up to date anymore, but a fair alternative might be to go with an Artificer/Wizard multiclass and just lean between the two classes as different “personalities.”
Starting with an artificer level grants medium armor and constitution saves as well as access to different spells. Two levels give a spell power-up, and three gives subclass features. Of course, if you really want “equally split” personalities I guess you would want to make the level split more even, possibly at the cost of performance.
Well he isn't in control of the changes cause it would either be random or a cycle so that some time it's the right personality for the job but most of the time it's the wrong one or at least not optimal. Also they will all share a spell list so it's not like you suddenly have access to different spells with each personality. Anyway I thought it was a cool idea and he might end up being an NPC in a campaign.

Anyway, it was just a thought.
