i'm playing a transmuter lately and the transmuter savant feat really grinds my gear to a point, that i will ignore it in the levels that are to come. While i know, that the feat is not a powerhouse or really important for the class at the first place, i want explain why i think, that this feat is not good at all.
Any wizard get 2 spells when they gain a level. If you want your transmuter to feel and play like a transmuter you should have a lot of transmutation-magic in your spellbook. But if i choose 2 transmutation spells per level i fell "punished", because it weakens my feat, that i can copy transmutation spells with less effort into my book. If i dont pick the spells of my school, i have to hope for the DM to give me acces to these Spells with scrolls or other spellbooks. And thus maybe i play a transmuter with less access to the spells of my choosen school.
So the point is, that this feat feels really counterintuitive to me. Have you come to a similar problem with this feat with your wizards?
It’s not a feat, but never had a problem with it. It’s purely a bonus for spells in the school you have a particular talent in. If you don’t like it, just don’t give yourself the bonus....don’t really get your complaint. Pick the spells you want...Gaining any other spells is always at the mercy of the DM no matter what school you pick. The feature doesn’t change that
You are right. You should pick the spells that you want.
And this is an absolut minor issue, that i just came across because i didn't picked the spells that i wanted, because i thought: "I get those cheaper with this class feature". After i realized that i will now have 15-50 Hours of playtime until i can choose new Spells or are able research them, i thought: "what a bad decission, and what a poor gamedesign" , because the feature incentivized my choices from the start of the character-creation. But i guss it's like an issue with the computer. In 90 % of the cases the problem sits in front of the screen. But i still don't like the effect of this feature at all.
i don't think its poor gamedesign...just an uninformed decision. every feature can't be earthshattering - some of them really are little more than just flavor. there's thousands of rules, the idea that a person would understand them all and make decisions based on all of them isn't realistic. if you made a decision based on a misunderstanding of the rules, just change your decision.
