So I'm running an Icewind dale campaign, and the group is lvl 2, and I wanted to give our wizard a boost. So In Byrn Shander there is this Wizardly Hat salesman who can sell the Hat of Wizardry for 100 gp. But I'm wondering, what would be a fun way for the wizard to prove his wizardliness to the hat salesman to decrease the price to 50 gp.
If you have access to Tasha's... there's a section on puzzles. Included is a painting puzzle, each of a different monster type, and multiple ones at that. What happens, you take the monster name, then spell out a different monster.
EX - a painting with three gnolls is an O. A painting with one werewolf would be a W. Enough paintings later, and you get Owlbear.
So, the idea here is that the wizard would get a similar puzzle, but instead of pictures of monsters, we'd have a list of wizard spells. And instead of number of monsters, its spell level. (ie Charm Person, Darkness, Nondetection, Water Breathing, Tenser's Transformation, Mirror Image, Spider Climb = CANTRIP). Each of these are from the PHB, so they can look up the spell level as necessary.
You can also give hints with successful INT (Investigation), WIS (Perception) or INT (Arcana) checks, usually DC 10. The painting puzzle has the following clues that you can adapt -
Intelligence (Investigation) DC 10. The character deduces that the number of creatures in a painting is important and uses that number to determine which letter of the creature’s name they should review.
Wisdom (Perception) DC 10. When looking at the dedication, the words “count on” alert the character that they should count the creatures.
how about just cast a spell in a creative use. if the merchant is picky about who he sells to, it'd have to be creative and cool. like 'use a spell to catch a moth alive and unharmed' or something like that....or get rid of all the flies in the shop without damaging any merchandise
