Every game I have played in, Gems have been given out as loot usually by amounts of worth in gold. Having a gems of valuables sections that we can increase and decrease like currencies rather then adding 10GP worth of sapphires then pressing plus 5 times, only to then have to split 50GP worth of sapphires 5 ways in the next battle and try and figure out a way to add them in.
Gems will vary wildly in worth : a small gem of diamond of low quality will have barely any worth, but a same size gem of diamond of higher quality will be worth more, as would a larger piece of same quality. Trying to create a system of all the possibilities of gems and their varied sizes and qualities - not to mention different trade worth by vendor, since one vendor may trade X amount and a different vendor may trade Y instead for the exact same gem.
The current system of literally just adding the custom item and gold value and quantity seems sufficient. You get 3x 50 gp diamond? Add item, name it 50 gp Diamond, set value to 50 gp and quantity to 3. Voila. Trackable gems. Get another better diamond worth 250 gp? Do the same, you now see how many of each type of diamond you have (useful for spellcasters using diamond as components). Much, much easier. In fact I do this with coins too, I use the normal currency for the coins "on person" and add custom items for other coins stashed elsewhere like my conjuror stashes some in his Secret Chest and others in his Demiplane. I have custom items representing these using the Notes box to indicate where they are, and set weight to 0.
I see no need to create, what I know will be incredibly complicated, systems to track such a trivial thing when you already have a convenient system you can use.

I'm not wanting all of what you asked. Yes, the way you put it is how we track gems and is useful for gems that matter like diamonds. What if the gems don't matter and are just another currency to track.
My suggestion was maybe having the 5/6 most popular gems and just have their gold worth very similar to how we have gold, copper, silver platinum. Just copy the code for moneys and have, Ruby, sapphire, Misc, Emerald, Diamonds then maybe a spare one the DM can name(this would be harder). This is for when the DM says u find a bag worth 75 GP worth of misc gems, or 15GP worth of sapphires.
I wouldn't say the current system is super convenient, As in my current campaign we found 80GP worth of gems, split it 4 ways -20 each, So i created the item set it to 10GP and clicked 2. Very next fight, 100GP worth of gems, split 4 ways is 25GP. So i change the number from 10GP to 5GP then set the amount to the appropriate held to 9 to show 45GP. Then the next session we find 50GP worth of gems, split 4 ways is 12.5GP each, So then I go around the whole table assisting others to change the $ value again and place the amounts to show the correct value. Pause stop and go, why not just have a currency button the same as we have Gold, Silver, Copper, platinum where its not how many we have but just there gold value.
Once again. A lot of work for something you can already do and for something very few use.
Gems are a lot rarer to get than coin. It is exceptionally unusual for your DM to be rewarding you so many gems.
If all you're concerned with is the gold value, then you don't need to split the types, just add one custom item line "Assorted Gems" and update the gold value. Edit when you sell them off. If you only use gems instead of coins in your game, just treat them as gold and edit the gold currency field.

That's great advice.
I disagree with "alot of work" if u just copy the current money code but change the names to gems. Also Disagree with "exceptionally unusual", As this is the 4th different DM i have played with and i have also DM'd myself. In every campaign Gems were given out. Maybe not as many as quickly as the current campaign. But yeah "exceptionally unusual" is a bit of a stretch.
Overall, I agree there are more pressing matters. Ie, fixing the new sorcerer subclasses from tasha's (being able to change the free known spells out) and so on. But I thought I would just raise it as a hopeful tip.
I agree as well, gems are very common in random treasure. So is miscellaneous jewelry items. I did like to be able to select gem enter and # and value if it has a name diamond, ruby etc. enter it as well and be done. easy to track and manage. Same with jewelry and art work ( which I'm still trying to figure how how the mural was stuffed into a backpack) but that's d@d for you.
