I make alot of homebrew in my games and recently i got an idea for a class, but there isnt an option for creating one here. Just saying as a player/DM that it would be a really nice feature to have class creation along with the already existing race/item/mosnter etc. creators.
Unfortunately they've said it's not on the roadmap and there are no plans for it. Apparently it's quite difficult to implement, would take too many resources from other development priorities, and introduce other complications as well. Never say never but IF it were to ever happen, I think it would be a few years.
There is a Home Brew section for classes though o_o.
They might be designated as Subclasses, but you can indeed create your own class. I am currently trying to figure out the kinks on one I am typing up on the site. Just go to Characters > Classes > Create.
Personally I am trying to find out if I can alter my Home Brew Race because, in doing research for the class I am doing, I found other things that are already in vanilla D&D that could have been used in my race. Back to sifting :D

What you are creating is a subclass, not a class. There is no current way to create a full class on D&D Beyond.

Considering there is a GUNSLINGER class that is *technically* a Fighter subclass... I am pretty sure you can do just about whatever the hell you want....? Because, personally, I wouldn't put a ranged firearms expert as a FIGHTER... A rogue or ranger, maybe. Not a fighter. Just like I am trying to do a thing that involves shields, and debate if I want to apply it under the Paladin class just so it has a "logical reason" to have heavy armor and heavy shield statistics.
What you make as subclass cannot change or interact with the base class features. So, no you can't do whatever you want and the result of your creation will only be a subclass. If you put it under Paladin, you cannot stop them getting channel divinity and divine smite. But under fighter you cannot prevent them getting action surge and extra attacks. Put under sorcerer and you can't stop them getting sorcery points and metamagic. Anything you put in the subclass will only be "in addition to" the class you made it a subclass for. This is why it is a subclass and not a class.

Eh, pretty sure stating that any divine radiant damage is instead converted to straight <fill in element here> damage instead depending on path can easily change it from being a dedicated Paladin. Will it still have a smite ability? Sure, because I chose to put it on the skill list. Because that is an option you can control. Just like I have made it so it can use Sorcerer skills. Will it get Sorcery Points and access to Metamagic? No, because I chose to not have them be super mages. I chose them to be more like an Arcane Trickster, but heavy armor and less stealth oriented.
So, if people choose to use a sub class that dictates so and so is different, they will probably have to go with what is different as per the rule of the sub class. It would pretty much equate to an Oath Breaker still having full Lawful Good law and being able to still gain Divine Favor. Pretty sure an Evil Paladin won't be able to call on their Good God. Equally it would probably be overly strange for an Oath of Devotion to be raising undead servants to fight for them, or casting hexes and curses on their targets. Meanwhile, if the sub class so says, you can probably do any of that depending on what path you so choose. If you choose to not USE the sub class, then of course you won't be beholden to the rules it will outline. But if you DO USE the sub class, and you state in said sub class that something or other from the main class is different.... Pretty sure the class you directly use will dictate what you do.
Now, I could be entirely wrong. I personally would follow the rules of the class I choose though. I wouldn't be like "oh, this is a Paladin sub class that allows me to do what I want. But I still have to have a Deity I follow because Paladin." I would personally be "oh, this changes how the base class acts a bit to be its own little individual thing. It still has ties that show what helped inspire it, but it is still a bit different."
Conversely, if you can create an entire class that somehow does not use what is already set forth... Good on you for somehow finding a thing that hasn't been done once >_> Because THAT will happen, with how old D&D is...

Try out my Outlaw man. It’s a great subclass, my group uses it over mercer’s.

Wasn’t really promoting but I saw that you guys were talking about difficulties with the base gunslinger class and thought I would offer up my rogue version.

Nah, I only originally chimed in because the original post stated they wanted to make their own class. Yes, technically it will still be a subclass of a class, but if you go through and write its own rules, it kinda becomes its own class. Using Gunslinger as my example, because it is usually a ranged firearms expert that is under the Fighter class, I only meant to point out that it is odd to put a ranged option under a fighter when there is already options for ranged combat. Meanwhile, I also brought up things like the Oathbreaker subclass of Paladins that basically re-write the Paladin rules to form its own thing. Same with Arcane Trickster. That is pretty much a blend of 2 class, both rogue and wizard.
It all just boils down to this: if you want to make your own class, you technically still can even if it is registered as a subclass of a pre-existing class. If you feel you have a great idea that technically "hasn't been done" already, just do some research and figure out what class it would best fit under. It is literally the only reason I am putting the Shield based class under Paladin, because Paladins are pretty notorious for using heavy armor and shield. It also gives some options towards class skills and spells. Will it be a devout follower of a god and smite with holy light? Hell no. It will do it's own thing while still having the options of smites and what not. Because, fun fact, you can still smite something without holy power.

Dunno if that belongs here lmao ;)
As is I still haven't played my own campaign, so no guarantees my dude.
