I don't think they care about "current" players all that much. This kind of changes just before a brand new DnD release is targeting future players bases who wont even remember that the marketplace allowed small-scale transactions.
Anyone playing right now already has all the 5e things they will EVER need to play current 5e and they can't really sell you anything new because they know that anything they buy might be a bit broken by the DnDOne changes.
Do we even seriously need official books anymore? Not unless you want to play actual AL at shops and need EXACT dnd RAW rules.
I could probably start a new private group DnD campaign for players with ZERO books just writing stuff down from memory and making up stuff when I cant remember. WoTC knows that, and they are just trying to squeeze what they can while they can from their "official' player base that tries to do things the right way.
They are now "just another company", and that structure is money hungry and structure-rigid. I'm not happy they are doing what they are doing and how they are doing it, but it makes perfect sense.
Go look at Netflix documentary about companies that started out with good intentions, like the vape cigarettes makers, or the 3D printers makers etc etc, and see how horribly they ended up when they tried scaling up too fast and the horrible realizations of what was needed to be done kicked in. I'm expecting the same thing here.
I am very disappointed by this. My PC has everything I need, but I'm literally doing my first DM session today and just needed to buy one PHB background for one of my players who is brand new to the game. I own the physical copies of the books and just wanted to digitally track the party's characters to start out so it can help me double check things as I get used to running a campaign. I'm not buying the whole digital book just for one background. I'm just going to not bother with DDB now. It might slow me down a bit at first but I'll manage just fine.
And I agree, having no notice beforehand is just tacky, making sure we couldn't go get any a la carte things we may have wanted to grab before the option left.
Well, to be honest, I have been using DnDBeyond for character options and Roll20 for adventures. Looks like I am moving fully over to Roll20 to have everything in one place. They are redesigning to make it all simpler and faster anyway, and if I cannot get al la cart here, I have no reason to be here.
Wow... Thanks I hate it! You literally just guaranteed that you will get no more of my money. I have bought SO much a la carte. Last D&D Beyond purchases I will ever make, and I think I will just switch to a new system for TTRPG's. I hear there are a bunch of new systems that you more or less willed into existence after the OGL catastrophe. Way to go.
I agree with most of the comments made in this post. I think D&DBeyond will end up losing money this way. But the addition of physical book ordering might make it appear differently. if they get sales on the physical books and less on the digital they may just end up making the site into a glorified physical product online store (or maybe that is their intent). I don't know if people in other countries will buy but i'm sure some in the US will. So it may or may not look like they are doing better than they actually are or could be.
But i think this is overall a bad move that is not done with the users of the site in mind at all, and is a very shortsighted and honestly the marketplace redesign is pretty bad overall...they didn't really make it better or anything.
I just found out about this now, I have made many A la carte payments for various subclasses, feats spells etc. When a sale goes up I have also purchased the rest of the material when a sale has gone up for the remaining 20 - 40% of of the sourcebook at a reduced price because its a more cost effective, attractive deal.
I don't know who Wizards think they are, if they believe that in this current economy the 5e fanbase will switch over the new edition at the costs they want to drum up and limiting the options of what people want to buy/ can afford to buy.
Well I look forward to hearing how they misstep next, I almost have a full house on my bingo card for ways for wizards to alienate the games fanbase.
So they added the long requested "Get Digital at a Diacount when you buy Physical".
But there are plenty of features, backgrounds, spells, etc. that I *only* owned in the Digital format.
I was happy to spend $5, or $10 or whatever to get the features unlocked in the Digital Toolset. Otherwise, that is $0 they would have gotten from me because the overall product didn't have enough for me to justify a $50 spend.

No announcement, no notice, no regard. I'm a master tier subscriber and I will re-evaluate this commitment.
This is pure greed. Period.
I will no longer contribute to this.
