as in bringing back the old-school NPCs run by players (like we had in AD&D 1) or having the character sheet for, say, your ranger's beast / drake (which can benefit from armor / potions / magic / etc...)
I remember the fun of having my character and then having add-on NPCs that we hired to bolster the party size to help in a dungeon.
I think this would be helpful in both cases. I see the first being something the DM allows you to create in the campaign page in D&D Beyond and have as your own. It's just not tied to your character and, yes, it hits up against the free 6-character limit (which would be bad if it is a GM-provided NPC or set of NPCs), which is why i'd agree having it as a limited subset of your character page.
I was referring to the new Sidekick rules that were put in place in Tasha's and having a way to make a character sheet for them. They don't function exactly like Player characters and I thought it would be nice to have a beyond Sidekick sheet for them like we have for Player characters.
Last I heard, a "monster builder" was still a planned feature with the intention that quickly editing monsters, applying templates, adding sidekick/class levels, swapping common features and traits, etc would be made easier and even roughly calculate CR.
It is one of those "someday, but not soon" kind of "planned" features though. Maybe it will be part of the big One D&D overhaul.

I think it would be really cool to have a tool like character creator for people who like to or need to use them.
Perhaps just add an option on the character creator.
I don't know how hard this would be.
