Roll the dice and play the game, I’m not here to listen to your politics.
“But this isn’t right. You’re meant to charge in, sword drawn, banner flying-that’s what all the other knights did!” “Yeah, right before they burst into flame.”
I like one-time fees. I'll go one better than you, though; "sell us permanent subscriptions, and, if we have permanent Master Tier subscriptions, sell us more campaign sharing slots!"

"Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both" -- allegedly Benjamin Franklin
I prefer subscriptions personally. I generally feel that them being beholden to me for my money on an ongoing bases gives me greater leverage for them to fix problems and add features. That said I can see the character and campaign slot limits could easily become a problem. Particularly with active DMs who run at conventions or are part of multiple groups and have multiple active campaigns. Streamers for instance who might use DnDBeyond to run multiple monthly games will bump up against the campaign limit quickly and player limit almost as fast.
5$ for an extra 6 slots would be ok as an option. As for the campaign slots it looks like they will expand the available slots, i would think being able to 'archive' a campaign and take it out of active rotation would be an alternative option (or additional).

"Where words fail, swords prevail. Where blood is spilled, my cup is filled" -Cartaphilus
"I have found the answer to the meaning of life. You ask me what the answer is? You already know what the answer to life is. You fear it more than the strike of a viper, the ravages of disease, the ire of a lover. The answer is always death. But death is a gentle mistress with a sweet embrace, and you owe her a debt of restitution. Life is not a gift, it is a loan."
