I noticed my DM spending a lot of money on tiles so I offered an alternative by pointing him to foam poster boards that are used for signs.
They are 1/8 of an inch thick and come in black or white. 4 boards placed together can make a consideably huge mat. All thats needed are a t-square and triangles to make the squares for the characters to put on..
Lastly these boards can be used for structures such as walls, buildings, paths and on occasion seascapes. All you need is a razor, stencils an markers to bring things to life.

As the son of a journeyman carpenter and certified master roofer I wholeheartedly agree with the idea of improv props and kitting!
Sometimes I go to the local Supercenter and look through the clearance aisle for small animal care and there are several props like those that go in fish tanks that would work great for any number of things on a D&D playmat. Wood shavings dyed green and spread onto a foam board coated on one side with glue makes great faux grass for a battlemat too fyi
Hi. I am planning to draw a city map. Do you know any good free programs for that purpose? I used Inkarnate for region map. What I am trying to draw is something like this: https://i2.wp.com/www.fantasticmaps.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/townpackunlabelled.jpg
This is a pretty interesting site I have used to make some maps (play with the options to get some nice maps):

Once I have roughly what I want, I'll load it into photoshop for colors and shading.

I am testing different options and LibreOffice Draw can open .swg file so that I can quite easily delete unnecessary buildings.
