I am trying to make a homebrew spell. It is a 2nd level spell that deals 2d8 damage, and I want it to scale to an extra d8 damage at each higher level.
I have tried so many different settings on the spell (Spell Scale, Spell Level, additional points, additional counts) and it still doesnt show up correctly on the character sheet.
What are all the settings needed to have this work correctly? such as:
- what to choose at "higher level scaling types?"
- how to format the higher level section: scaling level value, modifier to scale, scale effect, dice count.
I have tried to follow the DnD Beyond guide step by step, but doesnt seem to work so far
One of the best ways to find out what works, is to make a homebrew copy of a spell that does the same kind of thing you want, and see how it's coded. For example, Heat Metal has the die count and higher-level scaling you're looking for, just need to change d6 to d8.

^this. By far the best way to learn the homebrew system is to reverse engineer duplicates of official content that already do what you need and copy how they do it. And when you're done you can delete the copy from your homebrew collection.
