I Have just found on a friends character who is in the campaign I am DM for that when he equipped and attuned the Boots of Striding and Springing his speed went down.
He is a level 5 Dwarf barbarian.
Dwarf base speed = 25
Barbarian level 5 ability fast movement is +10 while not wearing heavy armor.
giving speed of 35 feet (this is what the character sheet shows)
When attuning the boots, it reduces the speed back down to 30. The boots say "While you wear these boots, your walking speed becomes 30 feet, unless your walking speed is higher". So should the speed either stay at 35, or the base speed is boosted to 30, and then the level 5 ability adds 10 making the speed 40. (or is somehow the boots considered heavy armor somewhere negating the effect of the Fast movement ability)
Such magic items that say, "Your X becomes Y" do exactly that - they don't replace base values or anything that requires maths, it's just a BAM this is the new total value.
In this case, there is an unless as well, so it should be 35, as that is greater than 30.
I've flagged this as a bug to be looked at, thank you!
I also noticed that the boots speed takes priority over the custom speed. If you try to override the walking speed to be something else then it always remains at 30 set by the boots. Whether this is working as intended or not I don't know, but thought I would mention it.
I was having the same trouble as RobF. One of my players has a 5th level Barbarian & also has acquired the "Boots of Striding and Sprinting", setting his speed to 30 ft. However now that he's reached 5th level & gained "Fast Movement", which would set his movement to 40 feet, his character sheet wont reflect that. I tried to manually override it but it remains at 30 feet.
Please let me know if I'm missing something or doing something wrong.
I have a Dwarf Fighter level 6, took the squat nimbleness feat, adding 5ft. of movement. making his base speed 30, however while attuned to the boots, and having this feat, he is currently listed at 35ft of movement.

Thanks for the clarification.

Thanks in advance for your time.
I was curious about this as well.

Is this correct or should it actually be 30ft?
