I am trying to create a feat that would allow a Monk to pick a single melee weapon not in the accepted Monk weapons and add it as a special weapon of their Monastic tradition.
In order to do this well, I would need the following things: 1. the ability to (after choosing the feat) choose a melee weapon from a pull down menu. (that they don't already have access to) (you can sort of do this with Options, but it is long and wouldn't take into account any weapons added to Beyond later.)
2. Give the character proficiency in the chosen weapon.
3. Make the weapon count as a special "Monk Weapon" so that it can use Martial Arts and other special Monk abilities and see that reflected in the Character Builder.
Hi Fodder4Cannons, welcome to the D&D Beyond forums! I like your idea.
As you may have seen, there's already a modifier to make a single weapon count as a monk weapon—aptly named 'monk weapon' in the modifier list. What you may not have seen is the 'kensei' modifier in the same list, and an option built into it to choose either a melee weapon, ranged weapon, or any weapon as a kensei weapon. A kensei weapon effectively makes it a monk weapon, and may be a workaround for the time being until the D&D Beyond developers potentially find time to add this feature to monk weapons. The limitation is that a kensei weapon must be one 'that lacks the heavy and special properties' but I thought it may help.
I did see that. The issue with that option is that you need to say which weapon becomes a Monk weapon in the builder, it isn't something the player who takes the feat can designate.
unless I'm missing something, which is totally possible.
I did get a response to my feat when I submitted it. The moderator suggested that I copy the Weapon Master feat and alter that, which seems to have worked for the most part.
I was actually mistaken, I was under the impression homebrew feat options worked the same way as homebrew race racial trait options. Those allow you to link individual modifiers with individual options.

I'm glad you've found an alternative for now!
