I've had this issue in the past and seen it going around for at least 2 years now: but once again, the character portraits (along with occasionallly other "thumbnail" images) are disappearing on my browser.
Browser: Firefox, version 100.0, PC.
Last time: the solution was editing/deleting a specific D&D Beyond cookie as I recall. This is very frustrating to have to keep doing.
Seems to have been a long running issue; going back through the records: it was the "ratings" cookie that was the source of the problem some time ago; but apparently that fix no longer works... So good to know the site can "fix" solutions and not problems, and thus; become more broken over time.
I had this problem for a long time (I just didn't really care or deal with it) but for whatever reason, the issue solved itself for me. Not saying that you should just hold off and deal with it if it bothers you, I just didn't care and it fixed itself after a few months.
Update: the effect isn't even consistent; two characters' icons are missing, one is still there, but two of said characters are even in the same campaign.

Indeed I agree.
I don't have this problem with any other site.
Dndbeyond just don't care to fix the bug on their side.
