When viewing the adventuring gear tables in the compendium on my tablet (Nvidia Shield K1, Android 7, Chrome 56.0.2924.87) each "line" on the table would display as 3 separate lines. This does not occur in Chrome on my PC or Firefox on my PC.
Table on the PC normally looks something like this:
For a brief second it displays normally then switches. So, that could be it. However, that format makes it take much longer to scroll through a page. So, i would very likely go to a book than look it up on my tablet tbh

Understood, as a book has much more real-estate than a phone or tablet.
However, the global search that will be added in later phases of beta should alleviate most of the problem.
Good to know the search functions are going to get an update and hopefully that really does alleviate viewing issues based on size of screen or even size you have the browser window set at. I'm guessing you got some of the preliminary app searches ready to test now to make sure we could find spells, items and monsters from at least the SRD for functionality testing.

Is this reflowing of tables really necessary? On my iPhone there is plenty of space to display most or all of them in the normal format rather than as a list, which means significantly less scrolling.

I'd really like to reiterate this point. Because it "reflows" the tables regardless of screen layout (Portrait or Landscape). The tablet has an 8" screen size, landscape should provide plenty of real estate for equipment tables.
I'm not saying you should never do this. But 4+ inch high DPI screens are capable of showing quite a lot of info in a readable way.
In fact D&D Beyond's spell, monster, and magic item lists already do a much better job. One row per thing, lots of useful info at a glance, expandable to see more.
Here's a quick mockup showing the difference for the Other Adenturing Gear. More than 3 x the items on the screen, and completely readable if you ask me.
Also, on this table (and possibly others) I think it would be good for the item names to link to their descriptions below though.
As players know well, D&D has a ton of tables and many of them are unique. We are constantly working on table layouts throughout the compendium pages. I'm sure by launch many of these concerns will be alleviated.

I might need more information, but I believe this is intended. For the tables to work on smaller screens, they "flip" to a responsive view.

I'd also like to add that, for the couple seconds it displays like a table it displays fine for both the tablet and my cell (galaxy s5)

The class tables are another example of this, with loads of empty space.
There's got to be a better way of achieving this.
The current method totally undermines the point of putting the information in a table in the first place, which is quick reference by column or row.
Personally I'd prefer a (well designed!) side scrolling table, that made it obvious there were more columns to see to the right (or left).
Thanks for the feedback. We've received a good bit of feedback requesting the other direction.
We'll keep an eye on this to see if we need to make changes.

Definitely prefer your version.

That does look good!

Glad to hear you're willing to take a flexible approach to this! Thanks for the response.
