I’m not at all satisfied with what I’ve been able to accomplish using the current state of the item creation system here. My experience has gone something like this: (I’ve been trying to create a magical long rifle, similar to a musket) “Oh, you want to create an item? Okay cool, just pick an existing item to use as a template” (I select a Musket, which seems like a good place to start). “Okay, now add modifiers to define how the item works!” (I try to add and define a number of things, using the modifier system. Defining the item as ranged, making it a +2 magical item, giving it a 600 foot range, having it deal 1d10 piercing damage with an additional 1d6 force damage, and adding a special ability called Deadshot). I save my newly created item, and go to examine it in my items, and try adding it to a character. After all this work, what do I get? The system says “Okay, here’s your vanilla musket that you ordered!”
In spite of all that careful work, and the existence of features that would seem to indicate that I can edit properties like weapon range and damage dice, it seems that I am not permitted to actually change anything about the weapon or item used as a template! The only thing I’ve even gotten to stick so far has been adding a +2 magic bonus to hit and damage, but even that still doesn’t seem to correctly stack up to display the correct to-hit bonus I should be seeing, given my character’s stat/feature setup.
Is it just me, or does D&D Beyond’s item creation system seem critically broken, or just extremely weak?
You can't change weapon damage dice or range, there are no modifiers for it (you can add bonus damage, but note that it isn't very noticeable on character sheet).
The to hit modifier may be because your character does not have proficiency with firearms.

Homebrew base equipment is a planned feature.
