My issue is fairly straightforward. I have created a number of homebrew spells and I have added them to spell list of a homebrew monster. I can confirm that all the spells are functioning properly as they can be added to a player's character sheet without issue. However, when I attempt to use the tooltip function to link the spell in the monster's statblock - it returns a "tooltip not found" error. The same issue arises when trying to link to another homebrew monster within a homebrew monster's statblock.
Thanks for confirming this. I feel like it's a pretty large oversight in functionality but good to know that I shouldn't spend any additional time trying to make it work.
I'm not concerned with publishing any of this content, I just want to be able to link to the spell directly.
To be specific - my group is running Tomb of Annihilation and I have created a stronger statblock for Withers. In choosing new spells (both higher level and replacing some existing ones) I've chosen a number of spells from some of the third-party supplements on DMSGuild (like Elmister's Guide to Magic). After I have created each of the spells, I want to be able to add them to Withers' statblock so that, during combat, it will be possible for me to pull them up without pre-opening every homebrew spell in another tab.
It's unfortunate there isn't an easy way of doing this as, especially when the encounter tracker releases, it makes using homebrew spells on monsters completely impractical.
Well it makes sense considering the vast number of homebrew items out there.
As a web-developer, I rather point this toward faulty or short-sighted coding on the backend side or maybe even starting further back with the database model.
That is but my take...a lot of things that should be easily possible with a generic solution, but I have no insight on the current situation. Thus do take my opinion with a grain of salt, but I do think this is what's at work here: An overhaul is needed (and automatic scripts to convert the data afterwards into the new database, which I am hoping the ever-so postponed "general feature" update will hopefully bring).
you can however link the spell in the tool bar by simply curser highlighting the spell and using the link chain in the data entry window then placing the URL for the spell in the space provided this will at least keep you from having to do a search for the spell. You can just click it and the spell will pop up. Example fireball except you would link your home brew spell.
Another paying customer who wants this feature... not all of us will be using the VVT no matter what you do with it.. so please keep adding features so we don't look else where or code our own tools.
As another developer and to piggypack on what Namako said, it would definitely be possible to make homebrew tooltips, but they'd have to do a teensy bit of planning. An easy way to do it would be to make a [homebrew] tag, and maybe pass the author's name as a parameter to help make duplicates easier. You could also simply add a field to all homebrew creations for that entity's tooltip tag.
In all fairness, every homebrew entity's URL already has a unique key in it - they could just use that as the tag. It wouldn't be as intuitive as using the spell's name, but it would show up correctly in the final product.
I guess it would actually be pretty easy actually since they already have the unique keys...

Tooltips don't work for homebrew, be it spells, monsters or items, unfortunately.

You can put them in as links, but you cant publish them that way...

I would love to see this issue fixed
This would be an incredible addition to the homebrew section

This is possible.
