Like the title, I was trying to create a monk mountain dwarf, because.... well why not. And wanted to use the elemental monastic tradition (cannot remember name), but the app only has one "way of the open hand". Anyone know if this is normal or is this a bug. Oh and I'm building character using the player handbook 5e.
It sounds like you only have the Basic Rules enabled. Are you accessing the PHB content via content sharing (as part of a campaign) or did you purchase it yourself here on D&D Beyond?
I already own a hard back player handbook, is there no way of activating all the features because I have that, or do I have to buy the digital? If I have to buy digital as well kinda seems redundant.
Just like any other online D&D tool/resource, you need to purchase access to content found in the Player's Handbook, or any other official book that WotC sells.
So.... You buy the players handbook, they bring out a tool and to use all its features you need you buy the player handbook again, but this time digitally... Got it.
D&D Beyond is much more than just buying the books in a digital format. It has tools that link in with the content and allows you to automate a lot of stuff, and it's not even done yet. If you don't find value in paying for the tool, then don't buy the tool. No one is forcing you to pay for D&D Beyond.
There are many other threads discussing this topic, personally I think any new threads about this should be locked, since it's been talked to death.

Hi Strangair,
as you correctly identified, you need to purchase the Player's Handbook to create the character you're after.
D&D Beyond can be used for free and contains information from the following "free to use" sources published by Wizards of the Coast: D&D 5th edition SRD, D&D 5th edition Basic Rules, and Elemental Evil Companion.
Content from other sources, such as the Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, or Monster Manual, will need to be purchased from the Marketplace or accessed via another user sharing content with you via their Master Tier Subscription.

Hi,

A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one.

Also, it's not "them". It's Curse doing this, not WotC. They aren't the same company.
