Out of genuine curiosity, has anyone ever thought of putting a button for each of the tools and kits that are usable in D&D like Thieve's Tools, Artisan's Tools, Brewer Supplies, Disguise Kits, Poisoner's Kit, Herbalism Kit, Cooks Utensils, etc,? I've been adding them lately using the Custom Skill option available on the sheets, but I have been wondering why they aren't already a button, be it under skills or on the actual tool itself in your inventory. Just a thought I wanted to share and get some feedback on.
Tools do not use specific abilities. Most tools have one stat that is most commonly used (eg, thieves' tools applying DEX) but the rules specifically state that they're not tied to a specific stat:
"Tool use is not tied to a single ability, since proficiency with a tool represents broader knowledge of its use. For example, the DM might ask you to make a Dexterity check to carve a fine detail with your woodcarver's tools, or a Strength check to make something out of particularly hard wood."
It's also 'what can you creatively talk your DM into accepting as reasonable logic so that you can use a better stat.' A druid would probably use WIS for an herbalism kit, but an artificer might want to use INT, and would probably use the Nature skill as a basis for this argument.
You can make a custom skill, call it what you want (theives tools for example) and assign a "most likely stat" (dex for theives tools). You can also assign proficiency/expertise. You can even leave the ability blank and select it each time before the roll.
Understandable, and I get the idea presented. I simply thought it'd be interesting to have some sort of clickable option to make the rolls easier. It is fun to change up how the tools are used though.
That's how I've been doing it. I've used dex for Thieve's Tools, int for Tinker, and wis for Herbalism. I've also changed the tinker skill for a single roll using the settings that are allowed in that. It's very useful.
