Years ago, I found D&D Beyond, fell in love with the whole of it. Now, I've only played a handful of sessions of 3.5e prior to finding this, and those went sour due to DM and lack of commitments. I quickly purchased the Legendary Bundle, Dungeon Master Tier, and continued gathering every pre-order I could. It saves my limited budget that way.
After D&DB, I chose to DM, and our group grew, starting off with 8 players...my first time. I joined a few other groups, whom had previously had limited play because of the lack of available interest between groups. We grew in friendships and from my offer to DM one campaign, 4-5 others began as well... leaving about 30 people returning to D&D.
I share my stories, our game sessions at work, and created beginner one-shots to introduce new players. As I spoke up, others expressed their desire to play and learn. People from early teens (family) to late 60s expressed their desire to play. While time was limited, I prepared and readied several learning sessions, ready to lead nigh 100 people over time to D&D. Many of them had family and friends whom wanted to learn to play, but didn't know where to start. I was ready to guide them in too.
The community spreads D&D better than any advertisements, marketing campaigns, etc. We're your best chance to grow, and can be the largest obstacles as your now learning. My children's school setup a D&D Club because there was an interest, and it is a great learning and teaching tool. Politics, teamwork, strategy planning, organization, tactics, social skills, math skills...are just a few possibilities. They're likely to learn the shady techniques you pulled, because why not teach right from wrong, moral and ethical behavior by showing an example.
I kept my subscription with D&D Beyond for my wife and I, after the OGL 1.1 leak, because I'd hoped that Hasbro/WotC would learn. They didn't. Instead, they lied to our faces, we know what a Deception check is, we have high Investigation and Insight checks using the Help Action. Many of us learned or memorized much of the books, we're called Rules Lawyers. When we didn't know, we had the Intelligence score to conduct a History Check and ask for clarification.
Following the Natural 1 on Slight of Hand/Intimidation for OGL 1.1, they rolled a Natural 1 on Deception. After that, another leak may reveal an intended extortion in price gouging the community whom had hope that Hasbro/WotC had learned. We've been rolling Natural 20's in response to every Natural 1 against us.
I feel for those within the organizations whom have little say in what their leadership does. Not only are they throwing the community under the bus, but their own employees and partners right along with us. Organizations, especially large ones where the top levels make decisions, fail to realize who actually makes their company move. You're the horse that pulls the wagons to us, unfortunately, Hasbro/WotC have been cracking the whip while failing Perception and Survival checks left and right. Your leaders are lost, and need help.
With the recent catastrophic behavior of the leadership, I've got to pull out. I've canceled my subscription, as have most of my friends and family whom were holding out. We have already started spreading word, that you'll (Hasbro/WotC) get nothing from us until: you've taken responsibility for your actions, released a public statement and apology, and worked to create/join an OGL/ORC as others have started in good faith to their partners. Once completing these basic steps, you're looking at a long road of rebuilding trust. There's no Modify Memory in the real world that you can use.
We're taking a large number of the gaming community with us, looking at a vast variety of other TTRPGs outside your purview. Currently, they respect us, and are worthy of our hard earned income.
Thank you for what we currently have, it's an amazing collection. It's unfortunate I'll not be adding further.
