There is only one reason to use Beyond....on-line character sheets.
If my existing game using the rules I choose to use suddenly gets interrupted and essentially destroyed without and excessive outlay of energy by some dumb decision....I'll be gone.
And you won't get me back. I'd rather go to a competitor, manually enter EVERYTHING knowing I won't have to mess with it again than give you money.
I am just adding in my voice we are currently in a 3 year campaign that has been using this website and its features. Changing all our spells and options without the choice of using the spells we have for the entire campaign is not acceptable. There are 8 of use in this campaign and most have the master level subscription but if this change goes through there are other options for us to use for this campaign and our futures campaigns. I had the digital/hardcover option in my cart and was planning on buying it because I am interested in using the system but to have it forced on us at the tail end of our campaign is completely unacceptable and I will not be purchasing the material if this is the case
Don't fret guys, wotc is just telling people to use better, third party tools and to pirate the new books. They're clearly trying to get rid of dnd so why fight it?
sometimes you gotta wonder if dnd beyond will listen to any of this feedback and for once not just crash on. please see what has happened to other companies that have failed to listen to its clients and rightly suffered for it. you can fix this and get a solid win. till then i have also cancelled my hard copy books from my LFGS and my subscription is due which will not be renewing if this goes ahead
my only regret is that i ever bought content on d&d beyond. even before wotc bought it i should've known it would either die or be acquired. hasbro has no interest in what players want. i can't even keep the conent i paid for. i guess i just have to stop playing 5e entirely. it's like hasbro just doesn't want anyone playing d&d. i just don't understand.
Just chiming in - I pretty much "own it all" on this platform and have been subscribing since the early days. This is now more trouble than it's worth. Time to look at options as to how I can continue to play 5e. Thanks Hasbro.
Now keep those unsubs up so we can get A La Carte & ALL content working regardless of books and/or original publishers.
Even as someone who didn't like to see a la carte go, I don't think you'll get the same kind of pressure for that.
The initial planned course of replacing our current spells and magic items was so widely popular because it destroyed the desired functionality of things we already paid for. It created the question of, "Then why the heck did I spend money on this site?" It was attacking things we already owned and destroying the utility of the site for those of us wanting to use the current rules.
On the contrary, the removal of a la carte didn't affect anyone's purchases. If you already had an a la carte purchase you kept it. If you didn't already have an a la carte purchase you might be bummed but you also didn't lose any money over it.
Firstly, I'm incredibly glad to see this. I'd started creating ALL the spells as Homebrew and it was a tedious job. Not to mention a total waste of time given that I already own the content.
The second observation I have though is that WotC and Hasbro continue to make 'great' decisions and then rapidly backpedal when it smacks them in the face. Hopefully this is a cue that they need to do better in that space and actually use a human-centred approach.
At least we have one thing to be thankful for. I know my players in our multi-year campaign will be happy to know their characters won't be ruined with the changes. I'm glad they listened at least.
First of all, chiming in that I'm glad they backtracked. That said, this whole experience left the proverbial bad taste in my mouth, and I'm not actually sure I'll be reactivating my Master tier sub. I'm going to be thinking about it. One thing in the update that caught my eye.
Our excitement around the 2024 Core Rulebooks led us to view these planned updates as welcome improvements and free upgrades to existing content.
Meaning, WoTC just thought everybody would, of course, naturally want to switch to the 2024 rules if they are currently playing with the 2014 rules. That is a really bad assumption on their part. After having read articles and watched videos from those members of media culture that got advanced copies of the 2024 PHB, my groups have already made the choice NOT to switch to the 2024 rules. That is precisely why I was so upset that they were going to take away my 2014 functionality in the digital tools on the site. Not only that, but saying that you viewed the new rulebooks as "free upgrades" completely discounts the fact that as part of that "upgrade" you were planning on wiping out huge swaths of content that we paid for and forcing us to use something we hadn't agreed to use.
How about next time you don't assume things about your player base, and actually put out a survey or something? It's pretty darn easy to post a poll in the forums from what I understand.
Last thing from me on this. It has become quite clear that the subscriptions on this site are a powerful bargaining tool that the player base has to wield in "negotiations" with Hasbro. The en masse exodus of people's potential future money clearly has the power to effect change. I hope that those in charge of the game's future remember that, and make sure to ASK subscribers what they want from the game in the future, AND listen to their feedback.
Phew. Glad they changed their plans. I have other games I play which get new editions every few years, and then you need to buy the new books to access the new content. I don't want to do that with D&D too. Though I probably will regardless.

Hi! I'm EJO. I am a silly billy who forgets to play Genshin Impact every day and totally DOESN'T simp for at least three different ninja girls. Some other facts about me:
Milio has been ditched. Now Xerath is my friend.
My average accuracy in Marvel Rivals is about 15%.
The character sheet is the product. Currently, it seems to be the best one on the market. So when we make an update (5.5e) to the product, let's make our product *worse* for the people who *paid for* 5e but don't want to buy 5.5e yet?? Really?
This is almost a bait-and-switch scam. Making your customers feel bad is not good for monetization, and the fact that you acted as a company to harm your customers, instead of just leaving it alone, is even worse. You made a total non-issue into something that angered your customers. Just make it a toggle like the splatbooks.
Is this just for social media engagement? It doesn't serve the actual product. When people spend money, they want assurances. They don't want to deal with scandals and reconsider their investment every few months, even if the correct path is eventually chosen.
Also, think about the future. When 6e comes out, are you going to change the character sheet to not work with 5.5e? Hint: don't do that. Just leave the 5.5e sheet alone and create a new 6e character sheet. In fact, why not make original D&D and all the other editions available as playable character sheets on dndbeyond? Sell all the old books, too. You can widen your ecosystem without even creating anything new. It's better that someone buys a copy of Dark Sun on DDB for $2 than from eBay. Even if customers pirate some things, it's still a win if they're staying in your ecosystem, and bringing friends into your ecosystem. Enable players to play with the edition they want instead of forcing them away.
The best way to monetize your customers is to make the best product, give the best support, and build an ecosystem to fulfill their needs. Not by making barely acceptable products or by tricking/forcing people to buy them. To me, the 2024 PHB looks like a great product. Don't screw it up with weird/awful decisions with dndbeyond. If you don't know what to do, just make a burner reddit account and create polls on the dnd subreddits.
Don't get too happy friends, I'm sure WOTC is just looking at another way to bend us over.
Ive already moved over to another system I am not looking back. I own most books, have bought books directly from WOTC, and would consider myself a whale when it comes to how much I spend with them. I am voting with my dollars and leaving them for other companies that put out better products. I will spend the last days of what is left of my cancelled subscription urging others to do the same.
I feel like a fool for having purchased the 2024 content now....*sigh* I think I'll have my groups finish up their campaigns and then switch to dc20 or castles and crusades

Just admit you are about to miss Blackrock's deadline, and were ordered by them via Hasbro to do this as a rush to secure profit.
I KNOW the head of the WotC division of Hasbro is Blizzard Forums-hardened, so ACTUALLY cancel stuff, people.
DM, player & homebrewer(Current homebrew project is an unofficial conversion of SBURB/SGRUB from Homestuck into DND 5e)
Once made Maxwell's Silver Hammer come down upon Strahd's head to make sure he was dead.

Now keep those unsubs up so we can get A La Carte & ALL content working regardless of books and/or original publishers.
We found Blackrock of the Coast's Kryptonite. I suggest we further the pressure.

I'm glad they changed their decision! It really stressed me out thinking I'd have to homebrew everything for my casual players.

Hey all, we've heard your feedback and have published an article outlining our plan going forward. You can read it here. Thank you!

Where is the strategic thinking by WotC?
