So, when using the character builder if you look at the class tab you can see under class features the "available at higher levels" info thing.
Currently it shows you some very basic info about features and choices that become available at later levels, without really letting you input anything.
I was wondering how much work it would be to make it so that you can input choices there, to "queue up" the features you get as you level up.
Because that way players who want to plan out their "build", or explore the options available without *actually* levelling up their characters, are free to do so.
Currently, if you want to explore a character build, you'll have to manually set the character to that level, make all the choices, look at the result, and then set the character back to the level it actually is at for the campaign. Either that, or make several copies of the character at different levels, and that is a hassle if you're limited or just horribly disorganized.
I'm not sure I've formulated myself well enough here, and I don't know how many other things are on the plate of the dev team, but I'd love feedback (especially if people wanna ask questions as to what the hell I'm trying to explain here).
I would love this feature, particularly as it would make leveling up super quick in-game. The players could have their next level pre-planned as they get near leveling, and when they level up it applies all of the predefined changes-- And we're back to playing in 10 seconds.
+1 for that idea, it'd be neat to explore how a character might progress without having to alter your character stats and abilities. I'd thought it'd be nice to have a "versioned" character so you can roll them back, but that wouldn't be needed if you could plan out like this.
Simpler fix, but not nearly as intuitive or seamless. This definitely gets a +1 from me. I'm mostly a DM, but I like to brew up characters or have some npcs built as a character that would be great to be able to have different levels queued up in one sheet for so I can start them out but if the game doesn't get to them for 6 months, I can easily adjust as needed
Completely agree! One problem with the current system and multiclassing is that it takes ALL of your levels together without any thought as to which levels are chosen at what time. As a player this is EXTREMELY important because (for example) I might want the benefits of going lvl 1 Rogue in between my 4th and 5th levels of Fighter or whatever.
No more need for this feature, since now you can literally create a copy of your character thanks to the copy button they added, and then use that one to just level it up and see for yourself. i've been doing this since day one, but thanks for the copy button it makes the job of copying much easier.
that said i get you, but i believe that it is a trivial thing to just copy the char and level him up to 20 and then plan it from there.

Nah, not the same thing. I'd like my players to be able to plan out their levels, so that when they level-up, what they've picked out is automatically applied to the sheet. That way, they can gain a level and we can continue on with the game in a snap. This would be something that sets DDB over the top, as it does what it intends to do: Make the game smoother, and faster.
Just gonna say, we can already plan it out as mentionned above. the only real difference in what you are asking and what you what we already have, is a few dollars ! seems to me like you just want more "free" things. you know there are numerous options out there that allows you to do what you want. there is always third party apps that gives this ability. but if you must insist on it being in beyond. heres what you can do...
since we can now disable characters, it is easy to make unclaimed characters or disabled characters in a campaign. since most of your players are probably sharing books and things with campaign. they can simply copy their character in the campaign which allows up to 12 characters total, then once planned just disable it. that way it takes no space at all.
for my part i do not mind if my players have their characters up to level 20 and then scale them back to the level they are supposed to. that way they can plan it out without paying a thing. its not as if the charcaterswere destroyed once they get to 20, you can as easily just remove the levels and make the charcater back to what it was.
those are just 2 options, that are availlable now. but to be honest the master subcription is nothing to pay for and is totally worth it. same with the player subscription

I have purchased everything on DDB, lmao. I'm on this site a ridiculous number of hours, because I think it's fantastic. I'm not looking for 'free stuff'-- I'm seconding a suggestion that would, once more, set D&D Beyond over the top. The purpose of this website is to improve the D&D experience. Why in the world would we not suggest and wish for more ways that would make it even better? You realize that most of the threads in this section are suggestions of things that people believe would improve the DDB experience?
What you suggest is not at all what I've described, so I'm unsure if we're just not quite getting on the same understanding, or something else.
I do milestone leveling, my DM does XP.
In my games, simply due to the way my players play (last session they hardly rolled a single die, it was just talking back and forth) they didn't get to the end of the 'chapter', or to their long rest. I don't allow them to apply any level up features/HP/etc until completing a long rest, which means that due to the way the session went, next game we're looking at a mid-session level up. When you level up, you often have decisions to make, spells to pick, HP to roll, etc. etc. So now we're going to be stopping the game for 15+ minutes to do this, which sucks since we only play biweekly. Not ideal, but it would be worse to have them unprepared for the next segment of encounters.
My DM does XP, which he awards at the end of a session, but again... We only level up if we take a long rest. That doesn't always happen at the end of a session, so the same thing happens, only it might just be one person holding the game up, so they'd better be prepared... Except, oh wait, some of them are newer to the game, and need help and it becomes a thing. If only we could have done this at the end of last session when we knew you'd be leveling, without giving you resources you don't have, so that when we took our long rest you could just be 'ready'.
My suggestion is to be able to set-up a level beforehand, roll your HP, do whatever else you need to do outside of the game, so that as soon as you add that next level to your character, it applies those changes. Setting up another character of that level means swapping sheets, and having to transfer any new notes, items, HP changes, magic item charge uses, etc. that have happened since you 'prepped'. Or it means opening up - on a tablet or phone, no less - multiple character sheets and flipping between them to check what the changes are. That's not the level of convenience that's being requested, and it's so so so strange to me that you think requesting a brand new level of convenience is such an out there prospect. D&D Beyond is BASED on offering convenience. They want to make this the best thing since sliced bread so like... If you disagree with the suggestion because you think it would be a harmful thing to have, by all means tell us why -- but to just shut down a suggestion because it doesn't impact you is just plain silly, my dude.

You say i'm not talking about character pre-leveling, but i do this all the time. my friends do it all the time. in fact my friends and i have tons of characters level 20 prepared. and when we start a game we just pick those and scale them back to the desired levels. that way we know where we are going. and again i'm talking about ways to do just that in beyond. i have no problems with suggestion and if they decide to add this... fine by me, but i think the time and effort would be more well placed elsewhere then on a feature thats already in beyond.
what you are asking... is for them to change the way characters works. you want them to allow you to virtually level a character instead of leveling for real. something you can already do considering the characters can already add and remove levels from their sheets. why did you think people asked the ability to remove levels to begin with. it was so they can pre-level or make characters for the sake of it. or exactly as you asked, to allow for for pre-leveling.
the only thing you seem to have argument wise, is that not everybody has tons of characters slot. something that can easily be fixed by buying a players sub. which is exactly how the company works. by asking them the ability to just use 1 slot and pre-level characters. you are effectively asking them to have infinite slots without having to pay a dime.
i understand fully well where you are coming from and why you want such a feature... but what i am asking you is not what you imply in your answers... what i am asking you is... "why you want them to switch character building from slots into all the same sheet ?" all i'm asking is for one good reason as to why you want to change 1$ for 4 quarters !

You can lose a level in D&D so removing a level is kind of an essential feature. Levelling to check out higher level features is different than pre-leveling. Prelevelling using the copy and level up method is an inconvenient work around, and unintended side effect, even without taking into account the limited character slots. Speaking of which...

Tbh, I think pre-planning in a notes section is sufficient — just plan it out there and make adjustments as necessary. It seems like a simpler fix.
