I was in the middle of writing another suggestion, when I realised it was the wrong suggestion to make, and that thought led me here ...
Imagine this:
Every discrete "object" within the compendium is crafted so that the most commonly known information is placed in a "view" of that object which is accessible by any player
You login to the Lore books under an account, but within that account you create your character profiles, and having logged in, you switch to whichever profile suits your needs ( including a DM profile )
If a certain piece of Lore is only accessible from a particular location, because it is only written or visible in that location, then that piece of information is only discoverable in 4 circumstances:
when you're logged in to your DM profile
when you're logged in as a character profile whom is on a campaign, presently in that location, actively searching for that information, and with the minimum criteria required for discovery AND a successful check ( if required ) of skills required for discovery
you're in that location & have previously discovered, or in a different location and previously discovered, remembered or copied that information
you've been and taken the information ( therefore no longer discoverable by others )
So this would basically equate to having:
default beginning location(s) for Lore and other rare / unique items able to be stored by a DM & players in a shared campaign file set on a hosted server OR their own server ( which opens up a possible revenue stream for your products, by having paid hosting for such a service )
campaign information changes over time, DMs can generate &/or modify the location of Lore on a campaign by campaign basis
when players come to the online tools, their preferences and settings in each character profile on their account, determines where the system will look for further info, determine what they can find, and determine also what they actually do find ( Lore skills check ), and messages can be passed automatically to the DM to inform the DM of changes to locations of information which have resulted from player actions in a campaign ( if playing asynchronously via online tools from different locations and at different times ).
Just to clarify:
DM LORE VIEW: is static, the DM can always see everything BUT the DM can also see which parts of information relating to a particular object are in what default locations, and what campaign specific locations. THUS a DM can check what is known, knowable, unknown, and unknowable to each player character & NPC in a campaign
PLAYER CHARACTER LORE VIEW:
some info is static - ie: common knowledge
some info is common to a subset of characters and NPCs ( shared view )
some info is dynamic - ie: it is unique or rare knowledge in 1 or more locations which may change
We'll have to wait and see how the Campaign Management works in Phase 3, though I hope that it should be possible for a DM to define multiple campaigns and each campaign has specifics attached to it.
