When adding XP to the character, you are limited to entering XP and then clicking ADD. To add more XP, you have to go back to the main character sheet, manage XP, and then add again.
I think there should be a running tally of XP that you can add within the manage XP window. You should be able to enter XP, enter a descriptor tag (or small note), and then add more XP. This will make it easier to import already-created characters and help as a running history of your character's progression. You can even add the option to place a date tag on the XP entry so that you can easily recall "oh right, we fought Hobgobblins 3 sessions ago".
I totally agree with this request. It seems like the UI for Xp and leveling could be streamlined to show this level of detail. Also it should be more prominent that you have earned enough xp to level up.
I also think it would be cool if the dm could award xp to the party as follows:
1. Dm uses a check box to choose which of the players in the campaign will receive the so they are about to give out.
2. The dm types a short note and xp amount as mentioned in the original post.
3. When the DM hits submit, then this line item is added to the XP ledger of each selected player
4. If the player reaches the amount of XP needed to level up, there is a prominent icon shown throughout the character sheet.
seconded, this would be really helpful, sometimes ppl incorrectly add xp or forget to add xp and a log of gained xp with ability to note/comment would be a great quality of life improvement.
I 100% agree, I'm a new DM and I have no clue how to add xp or how they should xp or even track it for that matter, help is greatly appreciated if anyone knows.
In the character builder, on the Home tab, under 'Advancement type' select 'XP' from the dropdown. If you're starting from Level 1, that's all you have to do for the moment. If you're starting from another level, go to the Class tab and set your character to the correct level. Up top under 'Character Level' you'll see what advancement type you're using. You'll get a popup asking if you're sure, and it should state that it will set your XP to the correct amount for the start of that level. NOTE: if at any point your XP doesn't match the XP range for your character's total levels, you'll see a little arrow next to your Character Level indicating whether you need to level up or down (adding XP doesn't automatically level your character up). There will also be an exclamation point next to the level dropdown selector (below the Manage HP button).
Once you're got your character set up properly and you're running sessions, you can see your XP progress on the character sheet -- under your PC's name and image in the upper left, there's a little colored line that slowly fills up as you add XP. Click there or on the 'Manage' button to open the sidebar. Click on 'Manage Experience.' You have two ways to add XP. If the DM says 'OK, everyone earned 520 XP from that fight,' then you'd use 'Add XP,' if the DM says 'OK, everyone should now be at 4200 XP,' then you can use 'Set XP.' This is useful for when some party members are better at tracking their XP than others. There is no XP log, though. If you want to track that it needs to either be in the notes tab of the character sheet or in a different program.
If you're new to DMing there's also really nothing wrong with using Milestone instead of XP, calculating XP and tracking it can be tedious for some people, and if it's dragging down your fun, there's nothing wrong with throwing it out.
Even some way of tracking the amount of XP you have added would be helpful.... we've had multiple situations where 1 of out members can't remember if they added their xp, and we have no way of looking at our xp history to confirm 1 way or the other.

For example:
Total XP: 15,810

I agree with this idea, at the very least keeping track of the date experience is added/removed would be helpful.

Not all who wander, are lost
Agreed. A running list of "[Date]: [#XP] - [Note]" would avoid the confusion that arises at the start/end and between sessions.
I can't find the button is. can you add a example picture?
