I'm another VTTA user that used this functionality. Please continue to support a JSON endpoint as it helps make your product more enjoyable for users like myself. Previously, I was a Fantasy Grounds user and purchased hundreds of dollars in content. I have since re-purchased all of that content on D&D Beyond (I have a legendary bundle). I really enjoy the combination of D&D Beyond and Foundry VTT, enough so that I didn't mind repurchasing the content. However, the JSON export is a big part of it. Please continue to offer that feature.
The ability to access characters via JSON should be regarded as a feature, and not a bug. I run multiple DnD campaigns, all managed through DnD beyond. I just reupped the $55 /yr subscription in addition to having almost every book via the site. The fact that I can use those characters, ones that I still pay for through a subscription and nominal fee for content is great, as I don't have to tell people to try multiple platforms and have it be confusing during combat and minimize maintenance.
As much as DnDBeyond wants to be a VTT, they're not there. It took them years to get a digital dice roller, and as much as I like the idea, I don't want to play in theater of the mind for all my games and expect the services I pay for, including JSON for characters and all other VTT items, to continue this support. Hell, they should double down and offer this innately and provide better services/APIs for those that want to run their games via VTTs.
I'm another VTTA who user has been purchasing dndbeyond content specifically to use with this module in FVTT. My players all currently use dndbeyond as the gold standard for their characters, but if we can't access the data reliably then we would have to rely on the FVTT character sheets instead, abandoning dndbeyond. Please keep this data accessible in a meaningful way to developers!
I will simply add that I appreciate what D&D Beyond has been doing and when I found out that it was so 3rd party friendly I was even happier. Please continue to allow 3rd parties like VTTAssests create innovative solutions around this platform it will ensure my continued financial support.
Being a programmer in my real life, I appreciated this JSON endpoint. Besides using VTTAssets with FoundryVTT, I enjoyed making my own tools to work with this data. Please don't kill this API, it's an excellent service.
On a side note, it would be nice to hear from DnDBeyond to confirm that the api we are using now as mentioned above, will not change again in a few months.
This is basically what this thread is about. Thanks again for pointing me to the available URL, but I am afraid that the fix might only be temporary.
I'm just going to quote the below, because this is my EXACT situation. Please continue to support the JSON export. This is the ONLY reason I paid $$ to D&D Beyond / Switched over from using Fantasy Grounds.

As a Legendary Bundle owner and having recently switched to the amazing Foundry VTT software, this integration has been outstanding and key to my use of the D&D Beyond materials. This is an incredibly useful and powerful integration that only increases the value of the D&D Beyond resources and brand. I strongly suggest enshrining this as part of a formal public API. It would be nice to know that it isn't going to suddenly vanish now that it has proved so useful to so many paying customers.
My feelings are similar. Now, mind you, I just started with Foundry but three days ago, and it's gotten me excited yet again to be a part of this community. I loved being able to use the sources available as I have been a member for a couple years. I've been a master subscriber and a legendary bundle owner. Definitely would love to keep the previous abilities to continue using this awesome format.
Adding my own dismay at this. Like several others, I love to use D&D Beyond as the authoritative source for tracking all 15 characters in my West Marches campaign that runs on Foundry VTT. I invested in a lot of the content on D&D Beyond on behalf of my players and one of the core parts of my pre-game prep is to import the latest version of their characters into Foundry. This relies on the JSON file, which I can no longer access.
I'm urging you to please re-enable this functionality, or develop another method that will allow me some sort of data structure that I can use to import D&D Beyond characters into a VTT.
I’m also a Legendary Bundle owner and switched to the amazing Foundry VTT software purely because of this integration which has been outstanding and key to my use of the D&D Beyond materials. This is an incredibly useful and powerful integration that only increases the value of the D&D Beyond resources and brand. I strongly encourage you to view the benefits you have reaped because of smaller developers making the data actually useful. I can guarantee that the more open you become the greater your profit. If you continue to wall off these useful tools then I will be seeking another platform for my players. You should create a formal public API to enhance all our DnD experiences.
I am highly reliant on retrieving information for my games in JSON format. You provide a great service but it would be even better if all paid for content was available through JSON or some other web service. But the flexibility of ingesting JSON into the custom software I use for my games is hard to beat.
I have purchased every single thing that is available currently on Dndbeyond. Please work with the development team to enable the importing of our characters into foundry VTT. It makes it very easy to recommend Dndbeyond to my players and DM friends by showing off this capability.
Love D&D Beyond and it's one of the best digital tools around with a great UI. But reliable json access to various data is a pretty must have feature. Having that for VTT also doesn't detract from Fantasy Grounds, as those guys spend a lot of time making sure tokens are placed correctly on maps. They give you ready to run modules.
But I know my group buys D&D Beyond content for the third party VTT tie ins.
Agreed. An official response and supported API would be ideal. Like others in here, I've invested heavily in dndBeyond because it could be treated as a source of truth for VTTs. When I decided to buy digitally, I did a lot of research and this was the deciding factor for buying on dndBeyond.

Same for me here. I hope dndbeyond keeps the option available!
+1 to this. As a user of the best-in-field Foundry VTT, maintaining easy links to modules that translate info from D&D Beyond characters would be most appreciated.
As other have so eloquently pointed out, I too depend on there being a JSON endpoint in the API. I purchased ALL of WotC's material on Fantasy Grounds before I came to find FoundryVTT. Being able to allow my players to create legal characters here on DNDBeyond and import them to Foundry is why I chose to re-purchase all the reference material. I'm not going to make hollow threats about pulling out of DNDBeyond, my few dollars per month and occasional large purchase won't make or break the company... but I am asking you Powers That Be, to continue to give us JSON access to our licensed material - it is worth it to us to pay you monthly to use the material in Foundry.

+1 to what the above people said

+1, I would like an official response that there will remain a json endpoint of our characters.
I've been tossing getting the legendary bundle, definitely won't be doing it without a json endpoint.

I'm only going to continue purchasing content on D&D Beyond as long as I'm able to use my characters in Foundry VTT.
Without that feature I'll go back purchasingtpurchasing source material from Roll20 or even just buying books.
