Another thing I would like to see is the elimination or revision of the "heal completely with a long rest" mechanic. Talk about an OP mechanic.
I'm a 1E veteran from back in the day, and it seems 5E has over-simplified/hand waved a few things.
Poison can't kill you outright anymore, you can't go below 0 hp, and you get 3 death saves...It's actually hard to die in 5E.
In 1E, your actions were meaningful because death was around every corner. In 5E, there are too many safety nets. You can make a series of bad decisions, and still walk away in one piece.
There are variant rules that make it much tougher to heal - I think in the DMG. Things like having to role hit dice to heal during a long rest. Talk to your DM about it if.
Weapon Mastery feat for making versatile weapons such as the longsword useful. Thrown weapons as well. Something for whips and maces, perhaps, for those who like them.

Gritty realism is something... 7 days a long rest and 1 day a short !!!

A significant number of people have mentioned Dragonlance, and I agree, however I'd really like to see the original Dragonlance modules (12 in all) receive the Curse of Strahd treatment. Let's go back to Hickman's original campaign notes, open it back up into more of a sandbox experience (even the original modules were quite railroady, iirc) and I think you'll have another hit on your hands.
I would like to see WoC produce "one session modules" like TSR did back in the 80's.
I would also like to see the grappling rules revisited. I understand the need for balance, but a successfully grappled opponent, IMO, shouldn't be able to cast a spell or swing a weapon. Just reducing the opponents speed to zero makes it fairly useless.
Grunk, just saying, have you ever tryed grappling your friends ? tell me if they can't retaliate to you while you grapple them. now restraining is what you are talking about.

Hmm, all I remember is telling the DM that I'm going to grab someone from behind, ...which include wrapping my arms around their upper torso. I was told OK, but he can still attack you. Tell me D&DPaladin, have you ever grabbed someone from behind, which generally includes half their arms, and do you think they would be able to swing a weapon or make the fine motor movements to cast a spell?
At the very least, there needs to be more clarity.

What you're describing isn't Grappling. It's Restraining.

Actually, Restrained only gives the grappled foe Disadvantage. And it takes a Feat and two grapple checks to do it. What you really want is Incapacitated, and there's no way to do that from grappling, as far as I can see.

I should have been more specific. I meant that the way Grunk was describing how they grabbed someone in their session would not be a Grapple, but a restraint. I did not mean that while Restrained they could not attack at all.

I see. Yep, totally misread your comment.
FWIW, Grunk - I agree. Grapple rules have been lacking through the last few editions (possibly all editions, I got started with 3.0) but 5E seems especially lackluster in this department. I'd love to see a little more love given to grapplers.

Well it depends on how you look at attacks and casting.
Casting isn't always moving your arms in wide circles or grand gestures. They can be subtle hand, arm and body movements, or any minor limb ones (unless your constantly moving he target around, making the grapple harder to maintain, just holding them wont have much effect).
As to attacks, you could still headbutt, elbow or kick (or even throw if your skilled enough) someone while holding them like you suggest. D&D in that respect doesn't really make a distinction between using your weapon or "unarmed" when resolving the damage of said attacks. Much like it doesn't really resolve the differences in reach of a dagger to that of a sword. I'd expect if you want some variance there that is left to be more a house-rule or narrative thing

Again, its your DMs who did not do the right thing. its not the rules... there is literally nothing in the books, as far as i read in the PHB or the DMG, that says you need 2 rolls to get restrained. as far as i know, if you take a rope and tie someone, they immediately become restrained. as far as i know, there is nothing int he books either that tells you how to rect to said conditions. so as far as i know, the book first rule literally at the bginning of the book, is still in the work. "do the **** you want" nhow if you are stuck in ruling, then i suggest you go play pathfinder instead of 1e because somehow pathfinder has 600+ pages of strict ruling on each stuff inclusing how many more points of bonus you get from attack on top of a table.
my question to you... if you hate 5e so much then why are you even here to begin with ?

We seem to be not only WAAAAAAYYYY off topic here, but also getting nasty to each other. Some of us would kinda like to talk about what products we would like to see for 5e this year in the thread about what products people would like to see for 5e this year. Edition War and rules bickering might be better in another thread (or site)? Let's keep this community friendly and preferably as threadcrap-free as possible.
I’d love to see some format of the older games systems officially be acknowledged and converted to 5e. Some examples: Top Secret, Star Frontiers, Boot Hill and Gamma World.
I agree. Especially Star Frontiers. It had so much potential. I was really disappointed when they decided to drop it.

I don't hate it. There are things I would like to see changed. Just because they are unlikely to change, doesn't preclude me from expressing my opinion.
My question to you...If you can't stand having someone disagree with you, why are you on an online forum?
