Been using roll 20 and making my own maps and such , can I do that here? or do I have to buy all the maps.
Looking to start running a game again after a long time and going virtual is necessary for distance and obvious reasons. I have messed with roll20 some and see i can make maps/ encounters there but looking here i dont see that. I would prefer to go with dnd site being an old school guy but running the game with easiest to use visuals and such is my worry.
Do I get all that with master tier dm account to not just use all the books for 5e but tools to make my own maps and encounters? Looked around the site but seems I didnt see such.
Any help would be appreciated and of course advice is great.
DDB is not a virtual tabletop. Character sheets, content, an encounter builder, a combat tracker, that's the sort of stuff you can find here, but if you want a virtual tabletop with digital maps you can move the players' and monsters' tokens around on you'll have to go elsewhere.

Same here, I use both as well since Covid times hit:
I use DDB for Character Sheets, Encounter Building and the Combat Tracker. I've paid for most of the things on here.
I use Roll20 just for visual combat (i.e. maps and tokens). I use the free version, only uploading tokens and maps so as to use as little memory as possible as there is a limit to what the free account will allow to be stored.
Have the Physical Books? Confused as to why you're not allowed to redeem them for free on D&D Beyond? Questions answered here at the Hardcover Books, D&D Beyond and You FAQ
Looking to add mouse-over triggered tooltips to such things like magic items, monsters or combat actions? Then dash over to the How to Add Tooltips thread.
Also, worth mentioning that a master tier account doesn't give you any content on here, the subscription gives you access to create unlimited characters on here and (if you have the master tier subscription) the ability to share any PURCHASED content with up to 3 of your campaigns (currently been upped to 5 for the pandemic, although unsure how long for). Everyone has access to the basic rules and the SRD, (basically anything Wizards of the Coast haven't put behind a pay wall), beyond that you have to purchase the books from the marketplace. Also, on the subject of the books, worth noting that because DND beyond isn't run by wizards of the coast, anything you own physically or on a different site won't be able to be unlocked on here without purchasing it again.
That being said, I would still recommend DND beyond and possibly owlbear rodeo over Roll20, If you do want a full fledge VTT, it's worth looking at Fantasy Grounds, bit harder to pick up at first, but worth it in the long run. Definitely my VTT of choice, if I'm not just using DND beyond and Discord.
You can use the AboveVTT browser extension to turn DnDBeyond into a VTT. (so you can avoid roll20 and just use this website to play)
With that you can play with maps and monsters and other data that you bought here without having to use roll20. (or you can also play with other free maps )

Both. Dndbeyond currently for character creation. Eventually for campaign management. Roll20 for VTT. Mapping only.

Roll20 for maps and actual game play. You can also buy all of the books and adventures etc on there too.
