Late to the party but I just wanted to point out Doomdrake is right. This Magic set isn’t a rise in price: it’s a special set with powerful cards that are only allowed in more expensive formats that can use cards from many years ago. So the premise of the thread is just not factual.
And as you can see, I do play both games…though Magic is definitely more of a cash sink than it needs to be!
It's going to need to be as much of a cash sink as their other products demand it to be. Wizards revenue is through the roof, but Hasbro is down overall. So sure, D&D/M:tG is popular, but the rest of their products aren't. So now the onus is on Magic/D&D to produce money for them to keep other IP alive. MidnightPlat / Flushmaster also talks about the growing costs associate with the pandemic, and that has hit in the tech sector absolutely, but when it came down to it for Hasbro who is an entertainment company, one sector of their entertainment business boomed but their much larger segments in toys, which have huge movie tie ins, died because of COVID.
Back on topic, the irony for me is rich. I absolutely, unequivocally hate M;TG. ******* despite it. Can't stand it. Hate all TCGs with a burning passion. Think they're a giant waste of ******* time and money.
I say that while having invested at LEAST $1,000 into this website for all the digital content they've provided, every digital dice set and every piece of side content with the sole exception of the Tactical Maps, hard covers of certain books and at least another $2,000 in minis in the last 4 years. Not to mention food for game nights, dice, and other assorted D&D type purchases. The same amount of money people REALLY into Magic might spend. The irony is palpable. That being said, I think it's not about Wizards losing one cash cow for another, because that isn't the point. If you can get fans excited into multiple products which have VERY easy overlap? Then do it. The intent isn't for players to jump ship to D&D, the intent is to keep them excited for all products. I think the Magic side of Wizards is doing a really good job with that, and I think the D&D side is doing a really good job with that.
from a D&D perspective, not sure how you'd count MTG as a straw, let alone one to break a back. While some do play MTG to win, I don't think anyone in D&D plays to win (imo) as there is no 'win' since the only way to 'loose' ( again imo) is if your character permadies against your will.
if wotc came out and said 'you can no longer play D&D without owning MTG cards', that'd be a straw, but in a game where 99.9% of everything is optional anyway...m'eh.
