I have been playind D&D for years.. on and off.. always in person. Lately there is some interest in joining an online system and running premade adventures like The Mad Mage or Curse of Strahd, Tomb of Annihilation or Rise of Tiamat. However, between this, and Foundry and Roll20, none are very good at explaining what if anything premade is actually ready to play. Its more than just having the maps etc.. Think about Mad Mage.. 23 dungeon levels, monsters, treasure etc.. That would be a pile of extra work if you had all the assets but, nothing put together to play.. You still need the time to put into putting this together which seems to be somewhat pointless to pay more money and take more time..
Hopefully someone here can give me advice and point me in the right direction.. I have posted nearly the same thing in other posts be it reddit etc so that I get a cross section of responses from all the players (Foundry, Beyond and Roll20).
Dnd beyond is a fairly limited dm tool,it could help prepare combat encounters but otherwise no.The main selling point of dndbeyond is character sheet automization and easy homebrew crafting.
Whining that you need to do work seems annoying. Also your not spending any extra money running these adventures online.
Not sure what wining has to do with it.. ;) I think you meant Whining however.. I think you have answered my question. Beyond is basically an online character sheet and source information with little in the area of premade anything. Totally fine with that.. Seems maybe this won't be the place for me and my group to play. If i'm spending a ton of time, which I already do, preparing for an adventure, anything I add needs to be a time saver or worth the extra time which is extremely precious and limited as a resource.
So far the Mad Mage on Roll20 seems the way to go. Premade, time saver, assets placed and ready to go. Just have to read the adventure and understand what is happening and then run it..
Nothing against Beyond.. seems a great resource for some people.. just not everyone.
It sounds like you're looking for a VTT. Beyond is a reference library, not a VTT. Roll 20 is a VTT. Foundry is also a VTT, though from my limited familiarity with it I believe it is designed to import info from other sources such as Beyond rather than having it's own built in reference material like Roll 20's compendium feature (at least the one DM I've played with who uses foundry has us make characters here then he imports them). Foundry has a very nice interface and a lot of options, but as best I can tell (again, limited knowledge as I haven't tried it as a DM) it's a bit more work on the DM to make full use of those extra bells and whistles compared to Roll 20, which is my personal VTT of choice as a DM.
