Quite new to D&D and am trying to homebrew some items for a home game, but can't seem to get the desired effect.
Basically, I am trying to create an item that is an arm-band that can turn into a shield if "activated", so I the bonus you get to AC is only conditional and not active all the time. Is there a way when creating a magic item to set this up? So far I have it as separate items in a player's inventory one as the base form and one as the active for they must equip if they want the shield effect. I'm just wondering that there must be a better way?
Sorry, I'm quite the noob so would appreciate the help. Thanks.
I though of that initially, but the bracelet has other effects that can be used without having the shield active, but still needs to be equipped. I hope you can see my problem now.
Unfortunately at the moment the character sheet cannot handle temporary effects. If the only temporary effect is the change in AC, I would suggest for now when the player want to change their AC, click on the shield/AC icon, then in the sidebar click on 'customize,' which should expand some options. Under 'Additional Magic Bonus put in the increased AC (eg 1, 2) and then in the source put the name of the item. They will have to remember to go back and decrease the AC when the temporary effect is over, but they can just remove the numerical value, and add it back in again the same way whenever the item is in play. It's that or having a second item to equip/unequip, until the character sheet can handle temporary effects.
Then do two items. 1st item has the effects of the armband whether it is activate or not. Then do a 2nd item with just the additional effects. So, if neither are worn, the PC is "normal". With the armband on, PC gets constant effects and when the PC equips the activated 2nd item, then full effects.
As I mentioned above this is exactly what I've done, was just hoping there was a more elegant solution that I was over-looking since I'm a noob. Thanks though

You can do it as one item. Just have them unequip it when it is not activated.

Is there any reason not to just customize the name on a shield and have the player equip it while the band is active and unequip it when it's not?
Edit: apparently i replied before the thread updated on my phone. I second marigold's solution
That is the course of wisdom...seconding my opinions...
