I'm sorry if I missed the answer to this but I couldn't find clarity. Dread Ambusher states: At the start of your first turn of each combat, your walking speed increases by 10 feet, which lasts until the end of that turn. If you take the Attack action on that turn, you can make one additional weapon attack as part of that action. If that attack hits, the target takes an extra 1d8 damage of the weapon’s damage type.
So my question is if a weapon has multiple damage types will it deal a single 1d8 or will it deal a 1d8 for each type of damage? (i.e. magic weapon that hits for slashing and cold)
If the answer is the latter, would extra 1d8s be applied for things like the paladin's smite or a hexblades + pact of blade or a zealot barbarian's extra damage or weapons empowered with elements like green flame blade?
My understanding is that it does 1d8 additional damage, regardless. The type of that damage is the same as the weapon.
As for which type of damage, my call would be that it matches the damage of the weapon itself. In the example of the Paladin's Smite, the Smite damage isn't provided by the weapon itself but by the Oath's other covenant party, nit your weapon itself. A magic sword that has fire damage has additional damage applied via magic which is not the weapon itself.
I'd say that the damage type will either be slashing or piercing for physical weapons.

when you open a magic weapon up from your inventory (example Frost Brand Longsword) you will see it has two lots of damage, the first is what the weapon started out with and the second is the enchantment.
the “Damage Type” of the weapon is also listed, in the example it’s Slashing.
“If that attack hits, the target takes an extra 1d8 damage of the weapon’s damage type.”
it’s the weapons damage type, not the enchantments damage type.
Howdy,

Appreciate the help.

Typically, it's considered to be the damage type of the base weapon (piercing, bludgeoning, or slashing).
Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.

Tyvm! I was of the understanding that whatever damage was being dealt were the weapon's type.
Rip to my uber paladin fantasies.
