For the first time, Im finally getting the chance to take off the DM's Hat, pass it to my wife, and sit at her table as a player. She'll be running Wild Beyond the Witchlight, and Im currently attempting to flesh out a character concept idea. Im a little stumped on where to take it though, and would love input and advice!
The last time I had the opportunity to play, I created a necromancer Wizard named Friffin, who had a trademark Sean Connery accent, snuck out in the evenings to scavenge (or create, if there were those deserving) bodies to practice and learn. These actions were always oriented towards knowledge-gathering above all else, given an almost uncontrollable urge to grow his skills. He would then offer his corpse mastery services to his friends and allies, placing them in higher esteem above all else. The intent behind this was to have an older character with a lot of awareness about the world, but with a screw or two loose - presumably due to some sort of severe trauma. This seems somewhat perfect for Harengon, given they seem to mimic a similar obsession with exploration and knowledge, as well as a lack of control over their emotions given the extreme nature of the Feywild and its effects on such things.
Some thoughts in no particular order:
- Im a huge fan of flawed, imperfect characters - I'd like to have him be somewhat of a Black Sheep among other Harengon. The thought is that he might struggle to even get across his own feelings and thoughts with members of his own race, much less those of others. - His curiosity and excitement get him into trouble more often than not - He desperately wishes to find someone to share his excitement with, to finally be able to get past that communication hurdle - His interest in necromancy is most likely not innate from the get-go. Im thinking a lost teacher, lone friend, or pet kinda thing - This seems like a common struggle, but im not sure how to bridge the gap between being from the Feywild and making it to the Carnival. Im currently thinking a Witchlight Hand. Maybe a member of a Harengon Acrobats group, but more often than not sequestered in a room, vs actually socializing
Also, a bit of an example story that I put together:
"No, no no! That isn't right!" The crazed Harengon kicked out in frustration, putting a hole in the door of the crammed broom closet turned office, causing a deafening boom to fill the small space. "Whoops, we'll fix that later..." A few quick moments later, and the new opening is patched. Bits of old news clippings for a carnival now clumsily covering at least a majority of the crevice thanks to a quick incantation. The headlining acts were no longer visible on the bottom of the poster, the rest torn off in another frantic outburst or perhaps as a result of poor spell work. The Hare didn't appear to pay any attention to it, and instead went back to his chair, kicking aside used ink jars, old quills, and perhaps one too many carrot stumps. The seat took up the majority of the room and was clearly of custom make. The legs appeared to be larger, with long planks attached to the sides. He settled in gently, his feet finding well-worn grooves in the old wood. In a few moments, the room was abuzz with vibration, the heel of his left foot continuing to pound an ever-deeper hole into one of the boards. The next handful of moments were mostly uneventful. A tossed paper wad here, a pensive interjection there, and the ever-present thumping of foot pad against wood. The Hare's hand movements were a flurry though, often shuffling papers, drawing lines against straight edges, or tallying up quick calculations in the shrinking free space that was the margin of the desk edge. Yes, the Hare appeared to be on to something, that was for sure, but what? Well, that was another question entirely. Certainly not one the others in the camp would be able to answer. No, they were often more interested in the next show, or the opportunities the current plane the troupe was travelling to than the mad ramblings of the local nutcase. "AHA!" The Hare's movements grew even more expeditious. His arms became a blur, their motion creating a beautiful mosaic of friction and light as they passed back and forth over ever-growing complex geometric shapes and designs. The angles were right, that he was certain. The calculation was balanced, though it had so many variable factors even his quick wits struggled to keep up. But yes, there it was! He only had to think on the conversions, perhaps bringing - One hand had quit its motion, mid-carrot grab no less. That was odd, the pile was empty. He always made sure to bring plenty, even for the longest study sections. Tearing his gaze away from the papers, the rabbit flung his gaze to the left quickly, afraid to lose his thought for even a moment. A rotund, balding fairy with a bad case of gingivitis and an even worse case of the Mondays sat upon his carrot pile, a copy of the day's news in his hands. "On in twenty, you mad rabbit."
Have you thought about having a floating skull for your familiar? Give it the stats os whatever flying familiar you like but it just looks like a skull. The skull belonged to your previous mentor/tutor and you're trying to find the rest of his/her/its body or make them a new one.

The fey in particular take great stock in names and so borrowing from fairy tales or having a earned name that is clever (or not so clever) wordplay would be fitting. There is an old Buddhist/Japanese tale about a rabbit who offered himself to be eaten to a beggar (turned out to be a God) and he became a moon rabbit or jade rabbit as a reward who now makes mochi. I mention this because that contains elements of death and being an outsider. (Cannot be much more of an outsider then being raised from death and moved to the moon)
One of the rules of the feywild domain that you travel to in the module boils down to do not steal. So one way to be the black sheep of the Haregon's/ explain why you are no longer in the Feywild is your dabbling in necromancy was akin to stealing the bodies/souls from the afterlife or maybe from the earth itself.

Thanks so much! I'll definitely take a look at that. I really dig the idea of some sort of nagging, ever-present mentor. :P

I really like that spoilered suggestion! I'll definitely run it by my wife, see what she thinks. I also dig the idea of using a name from mythology that references rabbits. Thanks!

Bumping! I would love to chat about this if anyone is interested :)
I've got a bunch of concepts for playing Wizard Necromancers, here's a link ito part 11 here but it has links to all the others: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/class-forums/wizard/50937-necromancy-primer-part-11-the-undead-fan.

The harengon could have an undead rabbit familiar.

This seems like it might be in line with the idea above. Maybe a Lucky Rabbit's Foot kinda thing!
