I've always been interested in playing an awakened animal character, but never had any really fun ideas. I started to think about a potential crow sorcerer, and think that it would be fun.
What are some other animal/class ideas that are a bit uncommon?
Edit: I am familiar with how the game works, and this would be complete homebrew. I'd roll my own stats and adjust them accordingly.
Interesting idea. Problem is, you are still that animal just with a higher intelligence (10). So your crow sorcerer (using a raven stat block) would still have 6 CHA and no hands to cast spells with
Probably be best to do custom Lineage and create a race with crow like features (like a Kenku, but without the restrictions) and RP it from there

Cool, idc. I'm not asking about game mechanics, or how you think this would work, because I truly don't care. I'm asking if you have any idea on animal/class combos.
Its a freaking magic crow, I would be rolling my own stats, and adjusting accordingly. If you think it wouldn't work, then great! That's the magic of homebrew, and separate games!

Ok. I completely misunderstood what you were going for, lol. How about a chameleon rogue or the raccoon Ranger?
An awakened animal may not be as powerful as other characters but could, depending on player priorities, still be fun. Matthew Mercer lived his Balder's Gate, mid-2000s loving dream as Boo, the miniature, giant space hamster. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqLwCAt7Gbc&t=255s
As a prompt from ThriKreen, you could either partner up with another player to make a duo or, with some nerfing, make a dual character, that involves Groot and Rocket?

If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.
Firstly, no need to get so defensive (or offensive) when someone suggests that there may be a smoother way to integrate what you are doing with a game built around humanoid protagonists.
So, you're asking for what combos of animal and class would work, but don't care about how they would... work? That's somewhat counterintuitive.
I'm not sure what else to add beside the obvious - weasel-like creatures for rogues, bear-like creatures for barbarians. I imagine a badger fighter would be an option. Porcupine Paladin, perhaps?
Warlocks would be magpies, because they horde their trinkets and one could well be magic.
On a similar vein, I am currently building a character who is a bear that was reincarnated/polymorphed into a human. The change is permanent, so they have the mannerisms and memoires of a bear, but they are human. I'm really enjoying making their characteristics, haven't even started making their sheet or stats yet, and haven't even set myself on a class -though path of the beast barbarian is looking likely!

I'm sorry for getting defensive about last night. Yesterday was a pretty rough day already, and I shouldn't have been as frustrated as I was.

And thanks for the ideas! This was definitely what I was looking for.
Cleric - Trickery Domain - Fox would make a great kitsune character, with the number of tails representing the highest level spell you can cast (since 9-tails is the most common, and often consider more powerful of kitsune/fox spirits).

There is a mechanical way to do this RAW, but would require the use of the Side Kick rules. A Wolf with the Warrior Class for example.
Otherwise, the possibilities are only limited by your (and the DM's) imagination when using homebrew. A Gorilla Barbarian could be fun, or a Capuchin Rogue with the Performer background paired with a Bard would be pretty cool. A Warhorse Paladin and their Paladin companion perhaps?

Perhaps a planet of the apes type primate could classify as a humanoid for custom lineage.

A koala bear barbarian. So cute, and with a huge chip on its shoulder.
I would love to play a cat rogue with the Telekinetic and Telepathic feats. That sounds like a ton of fun!
Professional computer geek
You know, For a half second I thought the title was "Awakened Animal Crackers".
The funny thing is, I wasn't even surprised, just curious lol
Raccoon Thief Rogue all the way lol Lil bandits...
I could also see a lemur Ranger or Druid leaping through the trees. Or the fox bard

She/Her Player and Dungeon Master
Porcupine battlerager is a no brainer (literally).
I feel like a mimic octopus would be an excellent rogue or druid - it wouldn't even need to use magic, it can just "transform" into other creatures!

You could do a cat with a humanoid hole. As a familiar that it talks through, just an idea tho
